    Canon Vixia HV30

While I'm waiting for my new panasonic P2 camera to arrive I'd like to capture some footage off my little Vixia HV30 (miniDV, tape) camera and fool around with HD editing in MC4.0.2.  Has anybody had any experience with this?  I shot some 1080 30i and hooked the camera to my computer via firewire (I have no Mojo).  With it listed as a generic device I could control the camera but couldn't get a picture.  When I tried to digitize it flashed red for a few seconds and then I got the "video has unexpectedly stopped coming into the system" message.

I'm new to HD, so I need a little help with this.  What should my project settings be?  I shot 1080 30i in NTSC.  Im sure this is a setting I'm missing or something idiotically simple that I have, as usual, overlooked.

    Thanks.

Select deck type as one of the listed prosumer Canon cameras (cant' remember which one... hang on... Canon XHG1 - I use this setting for my HV20).

Also - I don't think MC supports the 24f mode of these cameras...

The first time I used the HV20, I noticed that the Video and Audio 1,2 tracks were not automatically selected in the capture dialog so when I tried playing back the tape, the video did not show on the record monitor. Rookie mistake but I wasn't really paying attention.

Let us know how it goes...

    Re: Canon Vixia HV30

If I'm not mistaken, you also have to create a new project type with HDV selected so the system knows to expect that signal at the firewire port. I'm not at my Avid right now, but I've played with it a few times in the past, and it always seemed to work once you get your settings right.

Check under the 'format' tab and see if there's an HDV raster setting for your 1080i project? I think that'll do it.

The only formats I can find that support HDV are in the 720p list.  None of the 1080 formats list HDV as a supported format.

I tried the XHG1 setting and it didn't work.  No input, no control of camera.

    At my Avid now.

Create a new project set to 1080i/59.94, then in the 'raster type' pulldown, select HDV. See if that works.

On MC4 and possibly MC3.5 Raster type has changed to Raster resolution. Choose 1440 for HDV

That's odd because I was under the impression that the HV30 is more or less the same as the HV20. Do you have the HV30 setup for HDV output?

    Re: Canon Vixia HV30

I got it working thanks to you guys.

For those who want to try capturing from a Vixia HV30 into Avid MC4.0.2 via firewire (no Mojo)

Open a new project in 1080i/59.54

Under Deck configuration, choose XHG1 under Canon

In the capture window under Res. choose HDV 1080i MFX not DVCpro HD MFX (this made all the difference)

At this point I could control the camera and capture footage with no problem.

The only problem I noticed is that when viewing the clips in either the source or record monitor there was a banding effect when the camera panned or tilted rapidly. It appears as a kind of stutter or incomplete scan of the frames.  When I click through the timeline a frame at a time all the single frames look fine, so it seems it is some sort of Avid playback issue.  I'll check on my Sony monitor from the camera tomorrow to make sure it's not on the tape, but on the camera LCD during playback I can't see it.

Thanks for all the help with this!

Similar problems for me with the Vixia HV30, although unlike the original poster, I can't even get it to capture evena  few frames.  As soon as I check the video track in the capture tool, I get an error (no video input present, I think, not in front of it right now) and I get the same error upon selection of the audio tracks.  Running MC 3.5 academic, yet to upgrade to 4.x.

Tried the above solution but still no luck.  Will try to send from PC to camera via FW to test that idea.  Wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences?  System capturing plain old DV just fine from a JVC BR-DV3000 deck, using all the same connectors and FW ports.  Hmmmm.....

    Re: Canon Vixia HV30

I never had MC3.5 - upgraded from XpressPro, so I can't say if my solution above will work for you (I guess not if you already tried it!).  Once I had the settings correct I had no trouble capturing from the Vixia.  Interesting that you can capture from a JVC BR DV3000, I sure can't, no matter what I try.  Are you using the Generic setting?

    Re: Canon Vixia HV30

Just installed the demo for 4.0.2. I made the correct adjustments, as mentioned above, to capture from my HV30. When I try to batch capture a quick 1 minute clip that I logged I get an error stating that Avid had communication with the deck but could not capture footage (something to that effect). When I hit the capture button w/out in or out marks I can cature footage fine. The footage is standard HDV. No 24pf. Anyone else had this problem or know what might be causing it?

Also, I have my monitors setup where my 16x9 monitor is on the left and an older 4x3 monitor is on the right. Is there a way to move the timeline and source record monitors to the left and have my bins etc. on the right?

    Thanks,

    Rastus

Nope, no generic setting, used the setting for the deck.  We've had good luck in our labs with these decks and Xpress Pro.  Wokrs fine in SD on my MC too.  ?  I've had good luck with the MOJO in Xpress Pro and now it works OK with Mc too.  Wish I knew why!

    From the time I bought Canon T2i, I haven't touched my HV30.

I keep it as a deck only. But if you want to minimize capture problems stripe the tapes before shooting.

    This would help a lot.
