  • Re: Internet access on mac client

If space is at a premium and Internet access is absolutely required, get one or a few Mac Minis and some KVM switches. Preferably on a different subnet with fixed IP adresses to at least discourage the less tech-savvy in case they try to swap ethernet cables...

  • Re: Uncompressed encoding to WMV

Why go to .mov rather than .avi ? Type 1 AVI files are limited to 2GB..., no such limit on Quicktime.

  • Re: Avid and Education - Help me help my peers. Be careful, its a long one.

Tony, could you find out the model numbers/brands of the hard drives in that computer? There`s anecdotal evidence that some laptops with slower drives (i.e. 5400 RPM rather than a 7200) ran into lag problems when upgrading to 5.5 (5.5 saves media slightly differently), just wondering if it`s not something similar since your problem appeared around upgrade

Hi Tony: A few essential concepts to install/maintain AVID software: 1 - The most important, since it's opposed to "typical" computer maintenance practices - Any type of automatic software update is the closest thing to pure evil (Windows Update, Quicktime Update, etc) - not being connected to the Internet will help with this, but you also need to avoid

  • Re: Capturing Analog through Mojo

You could go to the "video input tool" and set it for S-Video, then see if clicking on "consumer source" helps. edit-add: On the timecode issue create a new tape number and give it another go (AVID associates and remembers the df/ndf status of each tape number, the live capture is not matching the tc type of whatever DV tape you captured from last)

  • Re: Unable to launch Media Composer 2.7 as a Power User

Actually from the MC 2.7 readme file, page 15: For all Avid editing applications, you must first log in as an Administrator, install the application, and initially launch the application as an Administrator. You may then subsequently run the Avid editing application as a Regular User . Previous versions of MC (i.e. Meridien hardware) did require admin

  • Re: What a Discussion!

Knowledge of and access to basic Adobe products (at least Photoshop, After Effects) is also very useful if not essential, and they do work well with each other. Interesting how that aspect is usually not as "polarized" in discussions...

  • Re: ??? Next To Bin

Last time I've seen that, it was on projects saved to a network and permissions for a bin were messed up (we added another editor to the project but somehow forgot to add his rights to that particular bin). Since it`s not a network stituation check the permissions on the bin file ( .avb) on whatever portable drive/memory stick he`s using to move the

  • Re: Avid won't open with a certain external drive connected

How many OMFI files on that one terabyte drive? Since the system seems to start fine with an empty drive, it`s possibly the source of the problem (system gets overloaded when indexing/re-indexing media drives with a high file count even if there`s plenty of room left - used to be 10000 but 5000 is the recommended file count limit nowadays). http://www

  • Re: why does Avid keep scanning this workspace??

Each "client" (aka computer) is responsible for indexing the database of its own (automatically created by Unity) subfolder in each workspace. Those subfolders are named based on actual computer names, not the user names . So when you render or capture on Client1 the database of its subfolder is updated, and visible to other clients. If Client2 is connected
