• Re: 4k Monitor help

While I'm not using 4K monitors, I have a few of suites that are using computer monitors as 'client monitors'. The basic build is 2x monitors off the NVidia GPU and 1x HDMI off the Blackmagic Mini Monitor PCIe card. The caveats I've found so far are: - The BMD Mini Monitor is digital only - no analog audio output. - Many computer monitors

  • Re: Ingesting 8 bit source to 10 bit media, oops

Arguably the only downside I see to this is that potentially it gets a litlte more compressed as the 10-bit codecs are basically operating at the same bitrate, but encoding more data. However in this case where the 2 redundant bits are just 0-padded anyway I suspect there will be no difference. Ultimately there's unlikely to be any issue, and it's

  • Re: varicam LT can't link/import

What process are you following on the import and what errors are you getting? We shoot 250x scripted episodes a year on Varicam 35 and have never had any real difficulty with clip import. Was it working previously? Have you recently upgrades the Varicam firmware or anything? Also, what codec are you shooting?

  • Re: Blending modes...why is this function missing?

There also used to be a free blending modes plugin. DFT FilmTools I think it was. But unfortunately that stopped being available after 32bit support was ended. Given that the blending modes are incredibly simple* and well-documented math it should be very easy to implement, either within Avid or as a third-party AVX plugin.

  • Re: Looking for opinions: 4K Camera
I am considering the all-purpose DVX200, but its 13x zoom (364/483mm (35mm equiv.)) is quite weak compared to the XH-A1s' zoom tele...some close-ups are required, as well as occasional filming from 15~20 from the stage...
In general, the larger the sensor the less zoom range you can expect. Our Varicam35s

  • Re: Advanced keyframes WHY WHY WHY

Can you explain more? I vaguely remember changes to the keyframes a number of versions ago, but I've had none of the problems you describe. I still find keyframing pretty straightforward.

  • Re: Looking for opinions: 4K Camera

The Global Shutter requirement is hard to meet... That rules out everything Sony make short of the F55. It rules out all the DSLRs (I think). The DVX200 is out. Basically the only thing I can think of at the moment is the URSA Mini, but it's not actually shipping yet. I dear say if a DVX200 is too heavy for you then you're going to struggle

  • Re: Best i/o break-out box for MC 8.5 to supply 3rd monitor, etc

I've used various Blackmagic hardware from time to time, I have no problem with it. Some say AJA is better. YMMV. I think the Blackmagic Mini Monitor PCIe card is hard to beat at $145, but that's output only and SDI. For I/O with a few formats you'd probably look at the Intensity Pro for $199 (HDMI and Analogue I/O, but no SDI) or the Decklink

  • Re: HP Z800 Media Composer/Davinci Resolve GPU?

As a little caveat with the Z800 - beware the power supply. I put a second card (GTX580 I think) in mine alongside the Quadro FX3800 and found a few months later that my PSU was dying (it would randomly trip out and the whole PC would power off). It was replaced with another one which is apparently more powerful, although I haven't had a lot of

  • Re: most stable Avid MC atm?

I'm a lot less apprehensive about upgrading than I used to be TBH. I've found, over the past few years at least, that MC upgrades are usually pretty solid. It's certainly been a while since I've found myself on an unstable version or having to roll back. I took my main suite up to 8.4.5 (from 7.0.4) the first day it was out and I haven't
