Enough RAM for MC5.5.2 offline edit??

Hi there folks, apologies for posting if this pops up elsewhere but I couldn't see it in regards to my question.

I'm running two systems for a offline edit of a drama series, they're both:

    HP8600 XW Workstations,

    Intel Xeon

    4GB Ram

    MC5.5.2

    Windows Vista Professional 64 bit.

I noticed on the system requirements of MC5.5 it says 6GB for Vista, our hire company who supplied the equipment say AVID will still only use 4GB and that's why we're on it. I was just wondering if anyone could confirm this or give more info?

Although we're offline due to the vast workload we want as much power as possible for the rendering of the small effects that will be used.

    Many thanks

Running on a 64-bit OS, MC can use up to 4GB RAM.  To use the whole 4GB, there needs to be more in the system, for the OS, etc.  The increments by which you can increaase your RAM is dependant on your motherboard design.  Your xw8600 is 2-lane, and is increased in even numbers.  The typical upgrade would be 8GB.  On the newer 3-lane systems RAM is installed in multiple of three's, so it'd be 6GB.

In this thread there's quite a discussion of just this subject.

Your hire company is right, and they're wrong.  Avid as a 32 bit app will only use 4 GB of memory.  For that to happen, though, your system needs at least 6 GB.  Windows will be using around 2 GB of the available memory.

I feel that 4 GB is inadequate on a 64-bit system.
