    3d package compatible with DS

I am thinking about getting an external 3d package to work alongside my ds(I make mainly promos and the ds 3d isn't powerful or stable enough).Cinema4D seems to be the best but I was wondering if anyone has any other options they could recommend.

i dont know much about 3d, but softimage still uses some of the same ui buttons and stuff as DS.

would be kind of fun to run them side by side, as much as autodesk has changed it the ui still looks the same..

guys i talk to these days swear by cinema 4d, and ive seen them do a ton of awesome stuff in it.

This 10 years of 3D-neglegt in the DS is really, really sad,
I still think the DS is an exellent product but with a more
developed 3D-engine it would have been "awesome".

    And I now, I now, everyone's saying, if you're gonna do 3D-stuff,
    go for "the real thing".

But I don't agree on this point. If you can have a function
reachable/modifiable directly from the timeline that will
    undoubtely speed up your workflow.

And we're not talking doing a new Avatrar movies here, but
merely showing/moving DVD-covers and the likes around.

An engine that could import for example 3DS-stuff, (with
mapped surfaces) and then keyframe and light it, would be
    a big step forward.

But as it is now Avid isn't interested in even fixing the
bugs and "missed out features" in the 3D-engine that's
been a result of the port to the 64-bit software

    Sad... really...

shame about the lack of node based compositing, red support without the dredded wiretap, on and on tho....

Yea.  And shame about the need to still have to import file based media into DS rather than just AMA them and hit play like in MC  ...

Oh so true... mide you i just have'nt ever needed that functionality, that's pure luck really

    everything tool has weak links, everything has strong points... DS really does have a 3D compositor, just one that i cannot  use as;

    1) it does'nt import camera track data

    2) it's viewer is disfunctional

    3) Limited to 8bit

finding the ballance that works for each of us is the key.. maybe for someone the 3D functionality of Smack crippled by layer based comp'n outstrips the node based compositing of DS with weak 3D space tools... for me - my happy place is DS + Nuke
