    25fps footage in a 24FPS project

    Hi all,

I am currently editing a documentary and have a wide array of footage from various sources. Some of which is 25fps.

The audio and video for the footage is 25fps but I need to get it to work correctly in a 24fps project with the rest of the footage (shot at 24fps)

I have tried opening up the footage in a 25fps project and importing the footage, then opening the bin from the 25fps project in a 24fps project.

Then respeeding the footage back to 100% (as it automatically respeeded itself to 104%).

Then sub-clipping the clip out to make a 24fps clip in the bin.

When doing this, the audio and video keeps ending up out of sync. It is out of sync to start off with and drifts even further out of sync towards the end of clips.

Please help! What is my best thing to do to get the 25fps stuff working in a 24fps project.

    All the files are Quicktime.

If you need anymore information then please do not hesitate to ask!

    Many Thanks.

    Ben

What is the footage? DV? HDV? XDCAM? etc

How are you bringing the fotage in? Capture? AMA? Import?

What is the spec of your system? Processor and graphics card.

Change the framerate of the QT files using either Dumpster or Cinema Tools.

You may want to check http://www.xs4all.nl/~terburg/Publications/TVScenes_25_24.pdf for more info on the issue as well.

My previous posting included a link to a PDF I wrote with all that info included.

The info on Dumpster is in there too. It stems from here, by the way.

    Re: 25fps footage in a 24FPS project

Do you think its worth my while just using compressor to convert the files from XDCAM 1080 50i to XDCAM 1080p 24??

Doesnt seem to take too long on my Mac at home which is only a 1.25gb RAM, Dual Core G5.

I cant seem to reconform the files with Cinema Tools and thought that this may be the next best bet. Would I lose anything quality wise?

Just stick a load on in the batch monitor and leave to run over night?

I don't know if Compressor is capable of changing the framerate by slowing the footage down.

    Ok cool,

do you have any reason as to why youthink it might not work properly? Ill try it in the project at work tomorrow and see if its worked. The quality seems to be the same and the audio seems in sync in QT.

    We shall see!

Well, most apps that do framerate conversion perform some form of pulldown, which is not what you want.

    Re: 25fps footage in a 24FPS project

So yeah, you were right, that didnt work, audio is still out of sync. I'm guessing ill try download waveagent and respeed my video to 24 in the avid and then import the sound seperate and respeed that in wave agent.

Its going to be LOADS of work as we have tons of footage to do this too, so anymore suggestions to speed up this work flow would be helpful

    Thanks!

    Infact,

Ive got cinema tools open in front of me now, I open a click and in your document it says hit conform after changing the FPS rate to 24 and it should solve my problems, but conform is greyed out, do u have any more pointers especially as I cant download dumpster as the link is broken!

    Re: 25fps footage in a 24FPS project

I found out that Conform only works with frame based compression algorythms. So H.264 and the likes won't work. Try converting those clips to ProRes or Photo-JPEG or similar first.
