Do Media packs need additional hot swappable spares for dual disk protection?

    Hi,
I'm getting quotes for an E4 NEXIS with 2 media packs giving us 120TB.
One vendor is asking if we want 2 spare drives for additional slots.
"NEXIS E4 engine will have two blank slots (with drive carriers)."

I understood these drives are required for 2 disk [failure] data protection.
    Do I have that right?
    Thanks, Nigel

A MediaPack consists of 10 drives. Local Protection can be set on a workspace by workspace basis; unprotected, 1 Disk or 2 Disk Protection. There are physical slots for hot spares that aren't in use. If a drive fails, NEXIS will rebuild the file aware protection, first with the workspaces with 1 disk and then workspaces with 2 disk protection.

Each Media Pack will have the local protection. In the situation with two media packs in a single storage group. A workspace with 2 disk protection will have 4 parity drives - 2 in each media pack.

These spares are on top of the local protection. If/when a drive fails.

Thanks for the detailed answer and forgive my obtuseness.
So without buying the optional extra drives each media pack would have 10 drives AND an empty space for an additional hot swappable?
So a media pack has 10 drives AND one empty bay for a spare?

There are 24 slots in an E4 for drives. Two are for the SSDs and each MediaPack uses 10 drives. There's two additional slots for hot spares. An E4 can be 1/2 populated with 1 MediaPack and spare drives.
