Is the Media Composer interface slower on a PC than Mac?

So we've just had to move a bunch of our edit suites from Mac to PC due to the unavailablity of a new Mac Pro.

We've spec'd up machines (Dell) as to Avid's recommendations and were hoping for a speed boost from our 2013 Mac Pros. However since day one of booting up and installing (only) Media Composer and MacDrive the interface on all machines has been very 'sticky'.

Although exports and renders are done in a fraction of the time of our Mac Pro, the actual edit experience is much slower. Clicking away from MC and then back can take 20 seconds for the application to get recognised (or crash in Full Screen Playback) - if the . Adding a dissolve can take up to 10 seconds to launch the effect window. Clicking between the bins and the composer window can cause the programme to 'think' for another 10-20 seconds. Even when just editing, the App will randomly stop responding for a few seconds before it let me do anything. In-between times, the machine is super fast and plays back without issue.

FWIW, I've got my power setting set to 'High Performance' and have tried working from both local SSD's as well as Nexus, with the same results.

Excuse my naivety, but is this sluggishness normal with PCs, or have I just set something up wrong?

I actually think its faster on windows.  I've built (non qualified) many of windows media composer stations but working on a mac for this series now.

What build of windows is it (ie.  1703,1803,1903 etc etc)?

Also try working in ntfs and install tuxera on your macs.  But macdrive or paragon hfs should work well regardless.

Sounds like something wrong on the PC side. I run 2019.9 on 2 PC desktops (old Z400's) and 2 newe HP Zbooks and don't get any of those delays.

Are you running any antivirus software?

If you have task manager runing what else is active and is anything using resources?

Do you have the correct display driver?

    ANy I/O hardware?

I'm not a fan of Mac drives on PC's (Macdrive or any other software)

I always move to NTFS drives to edit from.

So I'd try disabling Macdrive and test with local PC media.

    Thanks Pat

I've tried updating the NVidia driver, but to a later version. We'll see how that goes.

I'm no mac user so I can't say what performs better. However on Windows 10 I have seen that enabling video editing mode and setting 3D performance mode to maximum makes a much bigger difference than in previous OS versions and not setting them can produce the issue you describe.

This isnt standard mate - you need a trawl of settings.  In fact there is an app that support have that will configure a PC for optimum Avid use.

Diesele, what’s the app you’re referring to?

Jeroen, I’ll try the editing mode and enable 3D when I get in on Monday (if I can find where it is).

    thank you

Careful with that app Chaps, it's very aggressive on various Windows settings, too aggressive in fact. I also fear it's abandonware.

edprep is indeed abandonware. Do not use it on windows 10.

You can use Avid ASDT but even that is not always giving good results with windows 10. I do use it but with care. Not blindly applying all fixes. Manually tweaking windows (advanced) power settings and nvidia driver settings is the way to go.

It was used by Avid on my system when I had the not saving issue recenmtly so it must be recent.  Took me bloody ages to restore things like shadows on oveerlapping windows (so you can see the edges) and fixing the gnarly jagged fonts it created!  Minor things compared to a slow sytem though.

It may be in the Avid utility folder or system tools.
