Not a great fan of the new Interface for 2019.6

Installed the new Media Composer 2019.6 today and so far not a great fan of the new interface.

Lack of skin colours (shades of grey) and softer looking icons dont help. Also looks a litle less professional for some reason.

And only grey or purple for fx icons now.

I'm sure once more variation of colour is added back I will give it another go. Otherwise maybe time to try Adobe.

Will go back to the 2018.12 version for now

    Not helpful, Mike. :)

To Kevs, I've seen posts from several people unhappy with the lack of interface colors, and the reply from Avid was 2019.6 is a first step, and they'll be adding and changing things in the next few releases.

If you want to make sure your suggestions are heard, post them in the Feature Request forum:

I like the new UI and bin maps has been very helpful. I removed the colors on the source and record monitor. I know a few people don't like the lack of colors but I had my ui setup similar to this color scheme. Overall its still MC.  Im sure adobe doesn't feel or look like 2018 MC your still making a change to something that isn't well 2018 or before media composer.

I like the new UI especially if Avid plans to keep updating it. It is not flawless but it is a better base.

    Thanks for the comments.

I am not against change and do like many of the features of the new Interface including docking which is well overdue.

Colour and contrast etc etc are very important when you spend hours and hours in front of a monitor so more flexibility not less is required to custom set what you are comfortable with and have a more productive session and less strain on the eyes.

Of course we are all different so what works for one won't work for another, just cant see why the choices have reduced when the opportunity was there to increase these during the rebuild of the software.

Kevs, Just checking: did you notice and adjust the Setting> Interface>  “Timeline and Composer icon brightness”  slider control fully to the right (then pressing Apply) when you evaluated the look of icons?

I ask because *I think* that slider”s Default position was full left which is least bright, possibly softer to sharp eyes like yours.

As I recall, that slider tool, positioned off to far right) went un-noticed by me, initially.

I eventually chose to use the darkest Interface skin, with Purple highlight color and put that icon slider set to full right.

Perhaps you tried ALL those settings too? Or not?

I also added Color to all my Bins and Timeline Background. So while i’d still Prefer a different choice of highlight colors and perhaps more control over font sizes within certain tools, including entire Settings array, (formerly subject to larger variable fonts in Project window) I feel very professionally supported with the look and direction of this new UI.

Going forward. I am more interested in evolution/expansion  of keyboard shortcuts and variations on docking/paneling features.

Re: Not a great fan of the new Interface for 2019.6

2019.6 is a half baked nonsense, should have NEVER been released like that.

Also, implementing so many radical changes helps a LOT if one wants to start some serious work...

Did you hire people from Microsoft recently? That would explain a lot...

Rolling back to 2018 version, 2019 is useless and will stay so for quite a while, full of bugs and user hostile implementations. E.g. releasing it with TWO (both utterly useless) color schemes was a fantastic idea. Aaaaarghhhhh... why? why? why???? [:'(]

    On AVID since ever.

    Cunningham....

A new version is coming next week.... and updated versions are coming in the next 2 months.  I realize it might not be for you right now... thats fine ... but it is for some.  A rewrite of code doesnt happen quickly and the foundation is built to bring a much better experience, customizable for many, and will get better in the next 3-6 months.  Roll back to 2018.12.6 if you need to .........

Post like this make me say aaaargggggghhhhh as my best is you havent contacted support. Did you create a new user profile? Did you read the user guide?

OK, so the solution of this drawback (only this particular one of MANY other drawbacks in 2019.6 release) is to mess with some config file. What a luxurious option...

Wouldn't it be much better NOT to touch these things at all? Not speaking about the fact these settings were severely crippled by AVID some 6 years ago when migrating to 64bit implementation (as bonanq metioned in this thread http://community.avid.com/forums/t/197413.aspx).

I remember those days when I could set different BG colors in my bin for frame view and clip view. Bins even remembered theis sizes and positions when view was changed. Not anymore...

    Hi Marianna,

thank you for your input, yes I started with brand new user profile, yes I did read the user guide before I installed 2019.6 , didn't expect 2019.6 to be so bad though.

Good to know new releases are coming and hopefully the issues will be addressed but I need to WORK on Media Composer. As users of 2019.6, we are being put into guniea pig position by AVID. Releasing such a half baked version is a big shame. I am happily back to 2018.12.6 and I think I will stay with it for a looong time.

By the way, today I spent my day in a big post house where I met several seasoned editors, assistant editors, technicians, etc..., we all spoke about 2019.6 and nobody, not a single soul, liked it...

"to bring a much better experience, customizable for many" - I thought this has been the case with MC already??? As long as "much better experience" now means bins jumping around like crazy, impossibility to minimize the aplication to tray (and bring it back to FG), and other things.

Please treat your customers fairly, 2019.6 is miles away from even being beta version, calling it release is something beyond my understanding. Not a big tragedy so far, I can easily live with 2018 for a year or two. What worries me most is the plan to implement new features into crippled 2019.6 version and to put 2018 branch on a sidetrack (and wait until it dies).

Long gone those days when "editors made AVID for editors" - yes, this was the motto AVID used in those days and I was looking forward to see what features were coming out in new MC releases. In these days, I am afraid what features are going to be missing or completely messed up. But still hoping for better times... trying to stay positive.

    On AVID since ever.

Re: Not a great fan of the new Interface for 2019.6

    Edit: Re Cunningham

    ----------

All valid points. But just one curious, if you're working in a profesional post house and so concerned about productivity (and stability probabliy), what made you jump on a version that's only been released for a month and been advertised as "re-imangined"?

Most of the post houses I've worked at usualy stay at least 1 or 2 MAJOR versions behind (so if 2019.6 is the newest, they'd only use up to 2018.6, and sometimes 8.9.4) and same with the OS version just to give it enough time to see how the new version works in reality. In a perfect world, when a software releases a new version, there should be enough debugging/testing implimented and so when the public gets it, it's already a go-go. But the world we're living in, there're millions of different types of hardware especially in the PC world, adding the implication of different version/type of operating systems, one company cannot simply test them all. Not to mention that game development companies are releasing "beta-stage" games and debugging in the first year of release...

All of those are just the technical side. So when it comes to personal artistic preference, there's no good answer. Therefore, I always think for professional work, it's best to wait at least 6 months for any new version, and perhaps even longer for a "re-designed" one. It's fine when you test it at home but not for a productive pipleine.

    Just my 3 cents. :)
