Adjusting bin column width in 2019.6

For some reason I am unable to drag the bin column separators to adjust the width of each column in Text View like before.

I am able to change the column order by dragging the headers left and right, but I can't adjust the individual widths. Hovering my cursor on the separators does nothing, nor does clicking on them.

A quick search of the Help file hasn't yielded any clues.

    Gurus?

In the Avid Editors of Facebook group, Keith Gerrard posted:

    Keith Gerrard:

As of now, you cannot directly drag and change the width of a column. Hitting Cmd+T will expand 'to fit' the information in that column.

    Thanks, camoscato.

Looks like another feature I will miss. Adding empty gaps between columns can sometimes really help legibility.

I'm hopeful that "as of now" means they are going to add the capability.

    Very encouraging! Thanks, Marianna.

May I humbly request the return of the "New Bin" button? It's such a little unique and helpful thing, and the bin containers have an empty space just waiting for it.

Re: Adjusting bin column width in 2019.6

I'm sorry to have to say, the more and more I work with 2019.6, it really feels like it was released in a rush. Adjusting the columns in a bin, to be able to read the items, has been pretty essential to me over the years.

We are told by Avid that 2019 and 2018 are completely different and two separate teams worked on the separate code, but looking at the console, I cannot see that and only that the interface has been the main change, new pipeline and export options notwithstanding.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the new interface and direction, Avid, but there are quite significant problems: This, Avid Titler +, losing focus and hanging when you minimise the progamme, and having to close project and then exit, rather than exit directly, as it hangs again.

Really? It is apparent to me that 2019 is the same code base with a modified UI - it's an evolution, not a new product. I too like the direction the product is heading and I suspect we are seeing the underpinnings of many future enhancements.

This was from Marianna, on the 28th May:

"2018.x and 2019.x are 2 completely different code based and are developed by 2 dofferent teams of engineers.  2018.x will ccontinue to be updated with fixes but NO improvements - while 2019.6 which we have been working on for quite a while will be the new UI, processor capable, etc... release.

Re: Adjusting bin column width in 2019.6

Well - that simply can't be true (at least not as you have interpreted it if I understand what you wrote). I think what Marianna meant is that Avid has branched the code in order to maintain the 2018 code as separate from the 2019 code, however, the 2019 code would have been based upon the 2018 code base at the time of the branching (or maybe the 2017 code base - I have no idea how long they were working on the new UI).

So it would be the same code base, now branched to 2019 as opposed to 2019 being some completely new software with a new rendering pipeline and new architecture. And sure - a separate group could be working on integrating targeted fixes from the 2019 branch into the 2018 branch... that sounds reasonable.

Part of saying that 'it's a whole new Media Composer' is Marketing spin, IMO. I also have no doubt that 2019 is undergoing some foundational changes as well in order to pave the way for future feature sets - I'm not suggesting that 2019 is only a reskinning of 2018 - that's why I call it an evolution of 2018, not a rewrite.

Does this distinction matter to most users? Proabably not.

Oh this would drive me crazy. Is this on a bug list somewhere? I've seen traffic about not being able to adjust "workspace". Is this what they are talking about or is that something different? In the manual workspace is a strip with profiles for edit, color, audio. I don't think thats what people are talking about.

I think you need to direct that to Avid and perhaps Marianna, rather than shoot the messenger. I can only take at face value what has been said, which seems pretty unequivicol - 'Completely different codebase'. I am in agreement with you, that I cannot see how that would be. But I trust and respect Marianna.

No - in the bins display in column view there are columns such as clip name, media type, duration, clip mark in/out, etc. and the columns for each seem to be of fixed width and you can't drag them around as you might expect. However, at the moment, they can be sort of 'auto-resized' to accommodate longer strings by clicking on the bin to bring it into focus and then using CTRL + T keyboard keys.

The discussion here also suggests that more work is being done on this (and other) new features to improve them over the next few releases.

I trust and respect Marianna as well, however, that has little if nothing to do with this conversation. My sense is simply that her choice of words may have been an over simplification for the sake of clarity. I don't think it really matters though. From here on out, 2018 and 2019 are being treated as independent and prehaps what matters most to users on this forum is that they should not expect 2018 to receive all the new features of 2019. From that perspective they are completely different products with some striking similarities...

And by the by - there has been no shooting here. If this were twitter we'd both have been banned by now - lol
