    1080i at 29.97?

    I received a delivery spec that reads "1920 x 1080i at 29.97 frame rate."

I'm a little naive about all this, since I only ever work in 1080p/29.97...but I thought interlaced was 59.94 and progressive was 29.97. Can someone explain 1080i/29.97?

    Thanks

Well, in essence, 1080i95.94 runs 29.97 frames per second, and therefore 59.94 fields per second. Oddly enough, we're used to calling traditional NTSC 480i/29.97 whereas that also is 59.94 fields per second.

Job is correct.  It is really confusing.  I think the problem came about when we came up with all the HD standards.  Now we could have (p)rogressive and (i)interlace formats where before we ONLY had interlace.  So the powers that be tried to be more specific.  But but old habits and names die hard.  People just kept calling SD in the US "29.97".  To make things worse, not all manufacturers followed the "rules".  Sitting here looking at an AJA Kona 3G control panel and it says 1080i29.97.  Then I look at Avid MC 2018.11 in the project start up and see 1080i/59.94.  These are THE SAME FORMAT!!  So why can't two industry standards say the same thing?  Who knows.

And that’s before we add PsF vs P. — or labeling some camera option “24p” when it is actually recording 23.976-inside-a-59.94-signal... ;)

How many fields per minute is that in drop-frame again?

Or how a lot of sound post houses still ask me for an “OMF”, even if they haven’t seen one in years.

So this is the format I would select in MC in order to deliver 1080i/29.97?

    Re: 1080i at 29.97?

Being the old fart that I am, I am always surprised by the number of 59.94p files I get from clients.  I politely question them about what they shot and why they need 59.94p.  Almost always they shot 29.97p and they did not understand what interlace was when the were setting up their project, but had read something about 59.94 so ......

...not at all obvious to this old fart, but thanks for clarifying so I can sound semi-intelligent.
