Solved: Deleted the waveform cache and it fixed the issue
I've been getting the following error message about 3-4 times a day for the past couple of weeks.
Exception: std::exception, what:[MainThread] Threads::SendMessageAndWait: No running thread to receive message PlayLoopThread kStopCommand
I can't quit when it happens -- have to force quit -- and lose everything after whatever the previous save was. Needless to mention, I'm saving a lot these days.
Any ideas on what causes this and how to fix it?
Media Composer: 2018.7.1 (latest version)
iMac 5K Retina - late 2015.
4 Ghz i7
32 GB RAM
AMD Radeon R9
Same error with two drives. First I used an older G-Raid 4 TB drive running over USB.
Now using new 8TB G-Raid running over Thunderbolt.
Would love some ideas on how to fix, this is not fun to deal with every day.
Try deleting the WaveformCache Folder located inside the Media Composer Project folder. Also delete the AVS settings in your project folder. Restart and that should do it.

Thanks.
Just deleted the waveform cache... but where would I find the AVS setting?
example.....
If all your editing bays are named AVID 100, AVID 101, AVID 102, etc.. Avid makes folders named AVID 100, AVID 101, etc.inside the project folder. Each contains a .AVS and .AVP file inside.
AVS files tell Avid the project settings (Audio Project, Media Creation, etc). In Avid, Settings window, any settings that is classified as "project" (3rd column) is stored in this file.
Yes, you can delete the AVS file(s) if you are having issues like cannot open a project, Media creations settings not responding correctly, etc. Avid will recreate them using the default settings.

Ah gotcha, thanks!
FYI just deleting the waveform cache seems to have solved the problem. Thank you!

Solved - thats great!
Hi Marianna,
I have two users in a project, working off of the ISIS, getting the same error. They are also on 2018.7. I'm going to clear the waveform cache and restart for them, but I do not see a .avs file in the project they are working out of. Is this normal for projects on shared storage?
Additionally, we're going to delete the waveform cache out of all users folders in this project as a precaution, but is there a possibility that even if this fixes the error for now it might not come back?
Thanks so much for your help!
Ashley
I bet you are on 10.10.x of macOS. Upgrade the OS if you are.
If you delete the waveform cache out of all users folders in this project it should t fixes the error fand not come back.

Thanks for the response, Marianna!
Actually no, the two systems having this issue are both on 10.12.6. I was wrong, however that they were both having this problem yesterday, only one of my editors was. He continued to have problems after we deleted the waveform cache. I then attempted to do a delete of his MC State, Site Setttings and Site Attributes along with his edit bay folder in the project. After that didn't fix the issue, and it continued to get worse, I updated him to 2018.7.1, as I had read that might fix the issue. In the processs, I updated the other editor to 2018.7.1 as well, as the Lead AE on the project asked that I keep them both on the same version of AVID (he was previously on 8.9.4). Today they were both having the error fairly frequently, so for the moment I've rolled them back to 8.9.4 so they could work.
I hope this information helps and thank you with any info you can provide. I also opened a support ticket with AVID this morning, so hopefully an answer can be found.
sounds good.... what is the case # you got? I want to follow this along and aid themin any way I can.
Oh awesome, thanks so much. # is 03568132
Marianna,
I'd like to submit that I can't get past these constant crashes... I do force-quit and trash the Waveform Cache folder, but it resurfaces constantly.
Any further updates?
TIA,jason
I'm now on 2018.9 (.8 did the same), running 10.13.4 OS with Terrablock media
And, in an effort to be helpful:
Multiple projects tried
Multiple project locations tried
MC State trashed
New user prefs
Background services quit
Only thing I can think to do is full manual uninstall...
Just to say I'm having the same issue.
Generally speaking 2018.9 seems quite buggy.
@jaketheeditor
Yeah, getting this crash quite a bit now on my system that's running 2018.9. Just doing general playback, mark ins/outs, lifts, forward backward and then suddenly it'll lock up and then the No Running Thread error. Third time so far today I've had to restart AVID, and of course you can't save when the error happens soooooo...:\
