Transcode VLOG 4k to HD -- huge files help!

When take our 23.98p VLOG 4k files shot on Varicam and want to transcode them to HD, then AVID only offers us one HD option to transcode to. It takes far more than real time. It is called DNxHD 444 350 X MXF. And then it takes up almost as much space as a 4k camera original. This is very confusing to us. Even though it is still LOG, shouldn't it be much less space for the files? And why would it take so long? We have AVID MC on Artist 8.9.4 and we are running an 8 core top flight brand new HPZ840 with 32gb Ram and a 96tb Raid over cat 6, by EVO.

Our question: Is there a faster way to do this with a lower HD res (DNxHD 175? Anything?) and perhaps that takes way less space and would transcode faster? Our machines are very current and powerful.

I think we need a few more digital HD formats

    Hmmmm ...

Could it be that you have the project set as RGB and not YUV?  That could limit choices.  Also the tabs in the transcode settings of convert to project rate or keep at source rate can change the options of codec type.

Look at those and see if you can get a wider range of codecs.

    4:4:4 produces huge files.

As jef says you should work on 709 not RGB.
