    synchronize multiple clips by audio

Hey I saw a video of person who was able to sync mulitple videos together with the audio. It was a basic and straight forward process. Highlight clips. right click and his select synchronize. I know MC has added the waveform sync so can it do something similar like this?

Those are identical tools.  How well it works depends on many factors. And each tool (different NLEs) may do it a bit differently with some having better results on different types of audio.

Why?  I intended it as more of a "Yes, but your mileage may vary."  You need to experiment with the tool.

On Premiere it works quite well, but depending on the recording and all. If audio is similar on camera and the recorder and the recorder is running more or less all the time, you can get results quickly. Still, imho it´s a painful process in comparison to just properly working with timecode. On Avid, it sucks even more than on Premiere, and I say this despite the fact that I exclusively edit on MC. I even synced a project with Premiere once and transferred everything to MC Confused because audio sync in Avid is so bad Sad

    Sync by waveform is excellent.

    Avid's code writers pure "magic".

Re: synchronize multiple clips by audio

Sync by waveform (Adobe, Avid, Pluraleyes, You-name-it) is only as good as the recorded sound quality: feed all cameras with the same good audio coming from a sound engineer and it'll work perfect, have each camera recording its own audio with the built in microphone, with different degrees of background noise and ambience reverb, and it'll be a mess. There's no magic to replace a well done job, feed the same TC to all cameras, or the same audio, use a clapper, shoot properly and You'll have an easy life in post, or have monkeys to mess around the shooting and You'll pay for it down the road. And what about these cameras that are born out of sync with themselves? What a good base for the perfect sync. No robo-sync can do better than a good assistant editor with a fully working brain, no AI required.

I totally agree, but wait a minute:

Now that consumer cameras have all sorts of facial recognition, smile detection, etc., what is keeping a software genius from using AI to spot lips parting on the “B’s” and “P’s” of a speaker to confirm sync or perhaps do the analysis? If it were a 99 cent CEL phone app, needed by millions, it would be done already...

I won’t hold my breath... but I still like a visual analysis, if that’s even possible.

Actually, I have gotten mixed results and low mileage, using v8.8.5 Waveform Grouping the FEW times I tried it. I really should read the manual, in case it’s not as easy as it looks.

Is there a resource anywhere on this site (besides us) that gets into the weeds regarding what does and what does not work? My failed Group attempts involved very long camera clips (interviews). Possibly from a spanned format, consolidated or imported. Sorry I forget the HD format, but are there any known gotchas? Troublesome formats?  Do bit rates or other specs need to match? Can I Group more than two masterclips? (I forget)? Order of clips in bin?
