Composer does not like having monitors switched off.

Is there any way around Media Composer shutting itself down when the monitors are turned off?  It thinks the resolution of the desktops has changed and requests a restart which is not good.  We ingest a lot of media over night and do not want monitors running when no-one is in the building.

I'm not seeing this on my systems.  We often transcode material ovenight and just turn off the monitors, then turn them back on in the morning.

Have you tried going into the OS advanced power options and setting the monitors to go into standby after (say) 30 minutes. I know this works when MC is running and the workstation is left unattended, but I'm not absolutely sure if this would work during a long ingest process.

We are not seeing this either and we have a lot of users doing this on a regular basis.

As mentioned, check your OS power settings, your EFI/BIOS and drivers. Even check the monitor cable.

Digging into this a bit further it is a huge issue for a lot of people.  Just Google it for yourselves.  It seems that if you are using Display Ports which have PNP capabilities that can't be turned off.  So whenever the monitor goes to sleep or is switched off, the computer defaults the resolution to 1024x 768.   However, there is a fix.  I have tried it on my Z440/QuadroK2200 dual monitor port set up and I have rebooted, switched both monitors off and on to have no resolution resize and "please restart" from MC/SN request.   It is to do with the EDID status and you have to load it from a file you save and reload to/from your PC.  The link for the how to is here:-

I'll let you know how it goes over the next few days.

Yeah, this is apparently a response by the OS to the sudden 'absence' of devices connected to the display ports when you turn off the monitor, and I find references to this behavior going back to 2011.  It's not unique to Nvidia cards, either, as you'll find as many of the same problems from ATI users.  DVI ports don't display the same behavior.

Not really a Media Composer issue, however.

Re: Composer does not like having monitors switched off.

If I shut off the 2nd monitor of a 2 monitor config. while Avid is active, I get an error. If I'm doing an overnight render I launch MC with only the "A" monitor turned on, I can turn that monitor off durring the render/export.

Er, yes it is.  It may not be Media Composer's fault, but it is an issue when your ingest stopped and the editor is waiting for their media.

Re: Composer does not like having monitors switched off.

My point was that it's not an issue that Avid is responsible for causing.  I agree that it may be an issue for you, but the answer to the problem is going to lie with some OS or GFX configuration, not in some setting within Media Composer.
