    Avid-After Effects Workflow?

What is the most efficient workflow to take media from Avid to AE, add VFX, and then bring clip back to Avid? Without any quality loss.

I'm working in Avid Media Composer 6 I believe, shot on a Canon 60D, project is 1080p/23.976, footage is AMA linked and transcoded.

    Thanks.

Relink your sequence (or subsequence) back to the AMA footage, then AAF export.  Import the AAF into After Effects.  Do your manipulations.  Render from After Effects to a high quality DNxHD movie.  Import  or link that back into Avid and overcut it into your sequence.

I'm receiving this error when I import the AAF into AE. And then I can't see the picture when it's in AE.

You have to choose 'Pro Import' in After Effects for AAF.

When I Pro Import that message doesn't come up, but my footage is completely black.

Do you need to send an AAF? Are your shots complicated or multi-layered or are you basically doing some kind of composite over a single piece of footage?

    Re: Avid-After Effects Workflow?

I mean I could just import the original source clip into AE, but then I'd have to bring that back into MC, sync it, trim it to the original length and then cut it over the original edit to the exact frame. It'd be much easier if I could just export an AAF with the in/out points I want of the particular shot then just pull that shot back in and drop it over when I'm finished in AE with it.

I'm reading that AAF exporting AMA media can be buggy and not all will port over to AE. So that may be the problem.

    Re: Avid-After Effects Workflow?

It's not a perfect process, partly because Adobe would just as soon you use Premiere rather than Avid.  But the options are:

AAF a sequence (if it's not too complex) to AE

AAF an individual clip to AE

QTRef export a sequence or clip (assuming compatible codec) to AE

Render out clip in (generallly) DNxHD to bring into AE.

In any case you will have to import or link to the AE output file.  There is no round tripping.

If you export your clips to length, re-laying in the Avid timeline should be relatively painless.

I totally agree, a one click solution through the effects editor would be marvelous.

    Re: Avid-After Effects Workflow?

So basically if I can't AAF AMA-linked media out of Avid, then I have to export online media in DNxHD out of Avid, bring into AE, then export that out of AE in same DNxHD codec and import/AMA back into MC?
