How to Resize without Resizing Layer Below?

I'd like to cut out a hole on V2 using Animatte then use 3D Warp to blow up V2 so as to push through the hole till the screen is filled with V1. But When I Opt+ add 3D Warp over the Animatte on V2 and resize, it resizes V1 as well. I just want to reveal V1 without affecting it.

This comes up for me every couple of years and i seem to remember there is a simple solution, but I can't seem to remember what it is. You?

Hmmm...use the Picture in Picture filter...then open it in the Effects mode and promote it to 3D.

    Try that.

Man, that sounded so distantly familiar I thought that was it, Shane. But resizing a promoted PinP (or for that matter changing the Z Position or Z Perspective) still resizes V1.

you need to step into V2 and add the 3d warp once stepped in. Step out and it should look fine.

AH! Yes. I forgot that part.  You have to add it UNDER an effect in order not to have it resize everything.  So add an effect, then step in, add PiP and promote it, then resize.

Man, this is a LOT easier in FCP Legacy and Adobe...

Well, if I do that —and I've tried it now with both a 3D Warp and a promoted PinP, V1 does stay the same size, but so does the hole cut with Animatte on V2. Only the V2 image resizes.

Here's what I'm trying to do (and I know I've done this before): I've got a lockdown shot of a BMW logo. I want to fade out the blue and white crosshatch inner circle (OK, key it out, but over time) while zooming into it, revealing a different image. I can't easily resize the Animatte to match a 3D Warp resize because of —it would seem— algebraic issues.

    More clear or less?

Has anyone else done this successfully? I swear I've made it work in the past. My client's Avid (MC 5.5.3 on OS X.6.8) is a little hinky; I don't think anything has been reinstalled in ages. I'll try to test this on mine tonight.

Guess I'm only correctly remembering the problem and falsely remembering the solution. Kind of like producers who justknow they got a particular shot despite all evidence to the contrary.

Boris doesn't have any equivalent to Animatte does it? Even some sort of garbage matte might work as I only need an oval cut out.
