MC 5.5.3.3 + ISIS5000 3.2.0.355 == "file system busy" and disappearing bins on OSX 10.6.8

    Hello,

We are experiencing a very strange problem on a production shared on two OSX 10.6.8 Media composer 5.5.3.3 editing stations. Both stations are connected to the ISIS 5000 (3.2.0.355) with a single ethernet cable (the other ethernet port being used for global network access)

At some point during the day the editor will find herself unable to save a bin (exact same problem than described in this thread : http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/45/885773 except it's happening on Avid 5.5.3.3).

The .avb in question cannot be deleted either (once its content has been saved to a new bin of course). OSX simply says the file is being used... To delete it, we have to disconnect both clients and reconnect them (disconnecting either one will generally not suffice but it did once).

Unfortunately it gets worse: sometimes a bin she used to work with will suddenly appear in a folder named "Unity Bins", the bin will not open and is nowhere to be found elsewhere in the project... (except for previous versions in the attic).

    So bins actually disappear....

In fact it's just like if Avid was somehow "forgetting" the project is shared and acting like if bins were part of another project (hence the "Unity bins" thing with the name of the current project written next to the bin's name).

I've been unable to reproduce this problem voluntarily, it happens at random, sometimes often and sometimes not for days...

At first we were using the ISIS client version 3.5.0.445, then, on advice from our Avid supplier, we downgraded to 3.2 but the exact same problem occurred 24 hours later.

The editor has a colleague with a very similar configuration (they use Avid 5.5.3.2) experiencing the same save-bin issue but not the disappearing-bin one.

FYI, we use a single workspace for the project and the medias. The editing only started 2 weeks ago. We never used OSX Avid stations on our ISIS before.

The only slighlty related KB article I could find was this one: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/en420171 but our machines are named AVIDDDD1 and AVIDDDD2  (DDD being an acronym of the film's title) and we only use one volume.

I've got far more experience with Windows based Avid stations, my knowledge is quite limited when it comes to OSX. For now I've just excluded the workspace from Spotlight search (just in case it would have the stupid idea of indexing it).

I really have no idea of what I could try. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for reading.

I have far less issues with ISIS 3.5 on OS X than 3.2.

Are the Macs only network connection is the ISIS network?

IF not what are the IP settings (IP, subnet and gateway) for both?

With naming, I usually use numbers at the front.

The macs are connected to another network besides the ISIS, here is their config (I've obfuscated some data with ****):

In both cases, they're connected to the ISIS through Ethernet 1

Re: MC 5.5.3.3 + ISIS5000 3.2.0.355 == "file system busy" and disappearing bins on OSX 10.6.8

Has there been any updates on this error?

I've got the same errors happening on our system. It's all Mac clients (started on 10.6.8 but upgraded to 10.7.4). Media Composer 5.5.3.7, ISIS client 3.5.

We had a previous show that mixed PC and Mac clients, and mixed MC5.5 and MC6 without seeing any of these issues. I've added Intel PRO/1000 cards to some macs and have had some improvements, but the errors are so random.

not that I know of, after trying everything that was possible we replaced the macs with PCs... There was nothing we could do to fix the problem, it's clearly a bug with OSX+ISIS+MC. It might be influenced by the editors' habits since the same setup seems to work elsewhere without issues...

oh boy... We started editing on Macs, then introduced some PCs who started seeing some errors. Now we've taken all the PC's out of the mix and replaced them with Macs. I hate to think we went the wrong direction, but there's no way I can swap these 10 Mac systems with PCs.

I guess my options are to swap the ISIS for some other kind of network storage or possibly upgrade all the clients to v.6.0.3

I wouldn't rush to get a new ISIS. I'm having the same issue running off an internal hard drive. OSX 10.8.2, and MC 6.5.2

It seems the issue can have something to do with the attic. At least in my case.

I found that the problem appeared because the Avid project had several bins with the same name.

After making sure no 2 bins had the same name, the issue disappeared.
