    Video Peripheral Uses

With the newer thunderbolt I/O devices coming out I have considered purchasing one of the several options from Blackmagic Design and AJA to hook up with my iMac. I understand they work as capture devices and can be used to output video, but I am unsure exactly how they work with your software. Do these devices (such as blackmagic intensity) actually process the video sperately from the computer's CPU? or are they simply just for external playback?

I have looked online for some answers but I am still left a little confused.

Any information on this would be great!
