Small Inconsequential(ish) Buggy Things in MC6

I have now installed MC6 and BCC8 ... and may I say, without any of the uisual hiccups!  (Apart from a self-aimed shot in the foot, whehn I managed to delete all my user profiles and had to regenerate the Workspaces and keyboard alocations... :(  )

In doing that, I noticed that

in   Command Palette>Edit, it is impossible to select the icon for Select InOut, because the text from the next column is overlapping it.

In the Project Settings>Capture Settings> window, there is a Menu item 'almost entirely off the display which can just be clicked to bring up Function key commands when capturing - but there a literal in the heading - it says " (while capturin  " - missing 'g' and closing bracket.

I also discovered that the 'morph' effect I wanted and bough BCC8 for, actually isn't in BCC8 anyway ... its an Avid effect under 'Illusion ... "

    Insignificant stuff of course.

Mike, out of curiousity, do you have your Windows setup for large fonts (120 dpi)? That might affect the text overlapping. If you do have large fonts, try scaling them back to the Windows default 96 dpi and see if that helps (plus, if you're like me, you might need a new perscription for your eye-glasses).

Good point Steve - just checked, and I have the font set to 125%.  I guess that is the reason for the display problems there.  No bugs at all!  (The Windows 7 settings I see here don't go in dpi but in percentages).  I shall leave it at 125 because the text is just about readable for me - any smaller and I'd have to stick my nose on the screen.

I also see that my thumbs are still hitting all the wrong keys ... I must get into the habit of spell-checking  :-(

    Hi Mike,

I'd stiill call this a programming mistake, but one for which there is a workaround ;-)

At least you can shrink the font size if it prevents you from doing something specific and then set it back to 125% for the rest of your work.

    Cheers

Arguably though it's a Microsoft issue.  The library calls used to get text on the screen aren't particularly well behaved.  You'll see exactly this issue with other Windows applications - even those written by Microsoft itslef.

Re: Small Inconsequential(ish) Buggy Things in MC6

MC utilizes a UI developers kit called QT (not quicktime ;-). The kit allows for automatic scaling of the UI based on the screen size occupied by a given string. Been there and done that. It is possible, but it is quite difficult to accomplish and requires the UI to be entirely self-reorganizing in terms of its layout to adjust to variable font size. Most developers simply ignore this issue because it adds an extreme overhead to product development.

I don't blame Avid for this UI glitch - I'd rather they focus their efforts on NLE-related improvements instread of incuring the overhead of this sort of issue.

    Just sayin'

    Cheers

Yes, well - the suggestion naturally worked - reduce font size to normal, carry out the button allocations, then put font size back  to 'medium'. Except that at the moment I've left it on small and put on a more powerful pair of glasses!  Cool

That's true, but it isn't just laziness that stops most developers from doing this.  It can also often bring unintended consequences when controls dynamically adjust on a display to track font size.
