    Surround Sound in MC6

The webinar featured some footage of the Surround Sound manipulation in MC6.
    Is special hardware required?
Can any beta tester comment on the output method?

The beauty is that you don't need additional hardware.

AFAIK this will work with any supported I/O that has any form of multichannel audio output.

    Re: Surround Sound in MC6

So, I can go directly from MC 6 to Avid DVD, with a 5.1 result?

Possibly not.  On all other software that I use you must pay a Dolby licence fee if you want to encode to AC3.

Doesn't help the PC users, but if you have Final Cut Studio installed, it has a licensed AC3 encoder included in Compressor.

So then, we're thinking that a 5.1 result might not be possible with the "set" being sold by Avid for MC6?

A 5.1 result is possible if you have an existing external Dolby licensed encoder.  It's also possible if you're dumping out to HDcam, since then you'll be dumping the individual tracks rather than the encoded master.

Just going on my experience with CS5, a license for Premiere was around the $300 mark.  Presumably something similar will apply here.  If not, you can use something like Squeeze 8 with Dolby Pro.

As an indication of the licensing issues, check out the price differential there.  Squeeze 8 by itself has a list price of $599.  Squeeze 8 with Dolby Pro costs $699.  Whether there's a cross-grade price that reflects that you'd need to check with Sorenson.

    Re: Surround Sound in MC6

From the promo video on the website, I saw 5.1 in the dropdown for the output.  Can anyone confirm/deny that MC 6 has the Dolby license you speak of?

Also, does MC 6 support the monitoring of 5.1 mixes through a standard soundcard?

That just means you can output/monitor in 5.1. Has noting to do with Dolby AC-3 or DTS encoding (which you would need to fit 5.1 audio on a standard Video-DVD).

And AC-3 encoding is just an audio compression format, you can apply it to stereo too.

Avid DVD can encode stereo sources to AC3. I believe Dolby allows manufacturers to use AC-3 for 2-channel tracks for free, but requires you pay a license for 5.1 use.

You can also have 6 discrete channels of audio on a BluRay disc (not sure if Avid DVD supports that, though, haven't tried). For 5.1 AC-3 DVD creation, you would need an AC-3 encoder somewhere in the pipeline. It makes very little sense to me to include one in Media Composer, as it is a format for distributables, not for production. Would make more sense to have it in Squeeze and/or Avid DVD (where the 2-channel version is already present. IMHO.

    Re: Surround Sound in MC6

Thanks Job.  That was the point that I was trying to make.  Arguably you would need it if you're going to mix 5.1 in MC; but then you would also need a proper monitoring environment too.

That still would not require AC-3 encoding. AC-3 is mostly needed to cram 6-channel mixes on a Video-DVD. For broadcast, you would need a Dolby E encoder/decoder (which you may add as an AudioSuite plugin in v6).

For me, the lest expensive 64bit path was to use the Vegas Pro crossgrade special. The 5.1 encoder lives there. Liquid also has a 5.1 encoder on board, although it requires a mild work around to extract the .ac3 file.

True, TVJohn, but those encoders are not licensed for broadcast use (I may be wrong about Sony's but I recall having to purchase a Pro surround encoder licence on top of the consumer license that ships with Sound Forge - probably the same for Vegas?).
