MC 6 and BCC updates - Not impressed with pricing model

OK - so before I go off the handle - it seems to me the the upgrade pricing for MC 5.5 owners who happened not to upgrade their third party kit when upgrading from MC 5 to 5.5 are getting a poor deal.

First - the third party kit for MC 5.5 was a pretty lame change from that shipping with MC 5 (I think only BCC changed).

From what I understand, since I didn't upgrade to the third party kit for MC 5.5 that included BCC 7, I won't be eligible for the special BCC 8 pricing.

    This from Marianna -

    "

Boris Continuum for Existing Customers: Customers who own Media Composer 5.5.x, Symphony 5.5.x or NewsCutter 9.5.x and are currently using Boris Continuum Complete 7 will be entitled to a low cost upgrade.   Details to follow either within the next few weeks."

The problem I'm having with this is that the third party kit was always about $200 and then Avid bumped it to $300 but you often could skip a release or more in between MC updates because the incremental value of the kit wasn't changing much.

Now, apparently the MC upgrade price will be $300 and if the above quote is correct, I'll end up paying an additional $600 for BCC direct from BorisFX.

Maybe this isn't the case and I've misinterpreted the quote, but what I would have expected was a $500 upgrade that included both MC 6 and an updated productivity pack (the same pricing model they've been using for the past several years).

This departure leaves me sour -

    *EDIT*

I should also mention that I use BCC quite a bit - and yet I don't use Squeeze or Avid DVD so the new packaging doesn't work for me. For others I'm sure it's just peachy.

Yes, this would be quite the disappointing, when one considers that MC6 "breaks" the previous versions of Boris Continuum Complete.  I view the true upgrade price to be $299 + [whatever the upgrade to BCC8 will cost].  If BCC6 users get the shaft, my upgrade forecast will go from PROBABLE to VERY DOUBTFUL.

I can understand future releases dropping the grandfather clauses for BCC altogether, as users will have been forewarned.  Fair is fair.  But this came up without any warning.  Seriously, not cool.  There's a big difference between $299 and $898.  (For what it's worth, I expected today's announcement to come with a price tag in the $500 range.)

Re: MC 6 and BCC updates - Not impressed with pricing model

Yes - but that senior Avid product manager mentioned that the 299 price tag was for BCC 7 users - that's my point.

Regardless, my upgrade price is either 299 + 299 - best case, or 299 + 599 (assuming that Boris offers their standard upgrade pricing for BCC 6 to BCC 8)

Either way, for a 5.5 to 6.0 jump this is a very expensive upgrade

Re: MC 6 and BCC updates - Not impressed with pricing model

Yeah, for the record, I would also hope that BCC6 users will be included in the offer.

The only reason I *don't* have BCC7 is because I opted for the "buy-PhraseFind-license-get-5.5-upgrade-free" offer - at the time that served my needs better than getting a new boxed upgrade which only had the Boris v7 as an 'extra.' I certainly couldn't justify both!

So if anyone's listening, please do consider bringing BCC6 users in on the deal! You may simple lose us otherwise.

I have Boris Continuum Complete AVX 6.06 in my MC 5 effects pallet. If I upgrade to MC 6 will my BCC effects still work?

That is my point also.  $598 ($299 + $299) is only $98 above what I expected to pay for this release.  If the BCC 6 users don't get included, Avid and Boris will have priced me out.

Larry Rubin just posted this in another thread:

It doesn't matter which version of BCC you are currently running. If you own MC with the BCC effects package and you upgrade to MC 6, you will be offered an upgrade path to the (in development) 64 bit based version of BCC when it becomes available. The PROJECTED price of the upgrade is $299 but that is NOT set in stone, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. In any case, be assured that existing BCC owners will not be left out in the cold.

I hope that clarifies the situation.

Re: MC 6 and BCC updates - Not impressed with pricing model

    Folks...

MC 6 is 64 bit so you NEED 64 bit plugs or stay at MC 5.5.  BCC is no longer provided with MC as it is now only offered on Symphony.  However both Boris abnd avid realize so many of you use it so Boris will be offering a $299 upgrade to BCC 8 - deets to follow.

So if you have MC 5.5 and upgrade to MC 6 - you pay $299 and get Avid DVD, Avid FX and Sorenson with that price as 64 bit app's and then if you want to upgrade Boris you would need to buy from Boris the $299 upgrade.

Not perfect but the way it is....

just so long as those "deets to follow" include the equal treatment for BCC 6 owners.  I have seen a moderator write that there will be an upgrade price for BCC 6, but I have not seen anyone clarify that the upgrade price for BCC 6 will be the same as they one for BCC 7.

give us a week to work out the "deets"..... a lot of moving parts here but what we have done so far is fair so I dont expect us to do anything wacky unless Boris has requirements.  Dont know this yet.
