I have a few thoughts on this matter that I would like to share. I never install a patch, I will uninstall and go for the full install of the program. My rationale for doing so is this. Should I have a hard drive failure, or a motherboard failure and need to reinstall, I will already have all the tools on my side of the internet to make everything work again. (with the exception of the license should I not be able to deactivate it.).
Granted the process is a bit longer, but I am a firm believer in insurance.
Download time for the full install of 5.5.3 was 74 minutes.
Uninstall of the editor suite was about 20 minutes.
Installation of 5.5.3 was 18 minutes
Just my 2 cents

Hi there,
sorry, but you made me nervious now. I'm on mac and need to upgrade from 5.5.2 to 5.5.3 So what exactly is the procedure:
1. unregister
2. running the "uninstallers" in the application folder (Avid Media Composer, Avid CodecsLE, Avid CodecsPE)
3. restart
4. install 5.5.3
Can someone confirm please? Anything I missed? Thanks heaps!!!
Do NOT unregister your software.
1) If you're not running on a dongle (physical license key), you must deactivate your software license from the Media Composer special menu.
2) Uninstall Media Composer 5.5.2
3) Install Media Composer 5.5.3
4) Reactivate software license.

Hi Larry,
thanks for your answer. I'm not on a dongle, software only. What exactly do I need to uninstall? Just MC 5.5.2 or any codes etc. as well? Many thanks.
Specs: iMac 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5, 16GB DDR3, OS 10.6.8, Avid Media Composer 5.5.2
Greg:You need only uninstall MC 5.5.2 - the rest of the apps you can leave be. Before uninstalling 5.5.2, go to the special menu of Media Composer to first deactivate your software license. Then uninstall 5.5.2, and install 5.5.3, restart your computer as prompted, then launch 5.5.3 and reactivate your software license. That's all there is to it.
Have not used AVID DVD since I upgraded to Media Composer. When I try to use Avid DVD i get the message=
"Warning. Unable to detect security dongle. Check that the dongle is installed and the drivers have been installed correctly." WTH is that. The Media Composer has no dongle.

It sounds like you are using an earlier version of AvidDVD than version 6.1.1 (Latest version)
The older versions of AvidDVD were used at a time when MC used a dongle.
The later versions can be used with or without a dongle.
This may be the reason why you are seeing this warning.
If it is, then you will have to update.

It came with the bundle. I will contact Avid to see what to do. Thanks for your help and I really enjoy your videos, they have helped me out many times.
videosmithlaguna:It came with the bundle.
Robert I am guessing that you migrated to MC at the time of MC 4.x.x
At that time I think there may have been some overlap in the applications in "the bundle".There was a period of a few weeks or so that the version of AvidDVD being shipped was dongle only.
That said, you are going the right way when you say you will contact Avid on this.

Glad to have been of assistance. To be honest, my Tutorials help me out many times too
My memory is not what is was......

I agree and I do exactly the same. Never have had a problem, either in the uninstall, the install, or running the program.
Larry, just a quick "thank you" from my side, all working smooth!!!
You're quite welcome, Greg, and very glad to hear it.
The patch installed here without any hitch whatsoever. As expected of course ...( by all who don't know me and my ability to create havoc where all is peace and calm...! )
Mike Video Editing tips (for beginners!)
You are close to being an expert now Mike. The count of green dots under your name, indicates that. So I'm far behind!!
It will not take long and under the green dots, there will be a blue frame with Moderator.... listed
Expert? I wouldn't be too sure about that Sef! And the green dots were started back in the Liquid days I think.
I'm currently readfing through a book called Avid Agility by Steve Cohen - and I don't think I have ever come across a book so packed with really useful tips and wrinkles on using MC. Things which I didn't think were possible are - this chap must have really delved into the manual and winkled out all kinds of useful tid bit. If you get the chance to have a look through it, do so!
