    Rigid laptop for Avid MC5

Hi! I've been looking for a new laptop I can use with Avid MC5. I think I really need a portable machine, as I am traveling abit, and it would be good to be able to work while traveling.

I've always used Lenovo Thinkpads before and I really love how they are buildt to withstand almost everything you throw at them, but I could never get Avid to run properly on my old one. All though I know that there are no Thinkpads certified, I cant see why it shouldn't work.

The one I have been looking at is the Lenovo Thinkpad w520, http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=635780#extra (The site is in Norwegian, but the specs are called the same, so it shouldn't be any problem reading it)

Any ideas if it should work good or not?

This is an Optimus laptop as mine but with the difference that has a Quadro instead of my 450M.

Here it works excellent. Your CPU is i7 and all the components seems at least fine.

Mine has no firewire while what you look at has one and also e-SATA as mine.

However I have 2xUSB3 that are very useful.

You can even edit HD on a small WD Passport USB3.

Look for that connection as it is future proof.

I normally go by this guideline...

Good – SD only - Intel Core2duo with 2GB memory and any graphics

Better – SD and HD - Intel i5/i7 quad core with 4GB memory and NVIDIA graphics

Best – SD/HD/3D/RGB 444 -  Single or dual chip Xeon quad core or 6 core with 6GB/8GB memory and NVIDIA quadro graphics (Q2000 or Q4000)

    Simple and excellent guide.

    Agreed.

Keep in mind those e-SATA and USB3 connections.

I just got my w520 yesterday morning.  I've been up ever since trying to make MC5.5 work on it.  It runs, but there are some problems that I've asked about on another thread.  Still waiting for a reply.  The annoying thing is that it's just little things that don't work that make a huge difference.  It's not like I can't edit on it or anything, but I don't know how much longer I can take working with it.

Really? Thats interesting.. What kind of problems are you experiencing?

That really made me concider going for a HP EliteBook again, but I'm almost certain i'll miss the possibility of having my notebook with me at all times no matter where I am, weather or no weather...

The W520 meets MC5.5's specs in any way, so I can't see why you are experiencing problems either, but since you are, I'm delaying my purchase so I have time to do more research..

You did get one with a nVidia Quadro graphics card?

Re: Rigid laptop for Avid MC5

I ended up fixing a problem with video playback via a video card update (yes the quadro 1000m).  Lenovo automatically updates your drivers, but only after they approve it, so the driver was pretty old.   Just manually download it from the Nvidia website.  The problem that still persists has to do with the trackpad and ultranav (the red thing on the keyboard that acts as a mouse).  Whenever you use the scrolling function with them, all of the windows in avid disappear.  You have to select a toolset in order to bring them back, and you have to close any bins that you had open and reopen them to get those back as well.  It's really, really weird.  I solved this by using a bluetooth mouse as the scroller on it doesn't affect avid the same way (I wouldn't even think of editing on a touchpad anyways).  The other thing is that whenever you click on the menu at the very top, the contents of each window disappear.  They come back whenever you click away from the menu bar.

Besides that though,  Avid runs extremely fast on the w520.  And if you get the FHD display (1920x1080) you get a super crisp picture and a lot more real estate than the elitebook.

Also, not sure which elitebook you were looking about, but the w520 is compatible with mSata.  That means you can keep the HDD and the DVD drive and add up to an (i believe) 80 GB SSD on top of that to load Windows and Avid off of.

If you can live with these problems, It's an incredible machine.  It's just too bad avid acts weird on it... I've installed almost 30 other programs on it and they all run awesome.

    Hope that helps.

George does Boris and Avid recognize the CUDA cores and Open GL etc and work just fine witha GEForce card or do you 'lose' the CUDA cores for rendering power etc as you dont have a Quadro (even though a GEforce can have many cuda cores).  Key decision point for me!  Thanks

AFAIK Boris does utilize and recognize and Avid does as well.    We have new system's approved and I should be informing the moderators today so they can post.
