Random 1394 Firewire Flamethower Errors after equipment update (WIN 7 & DNA)

Updating my  http://www.freddylinks.com document I found this interesting KB entry regarding 1394 and Avid DNA hardware (Mojo SDI  /Adrenaline) running Windows 7

This might solve some firewire issues you have seen Smile

Random Flamethrower Errors after equipment update (WIN 7 + DNA) [373959]

    http://avid.force.com/pkb/LegacySearch?DocId=373959

After upgrading to Windows 7, you experience Random Flamethrower errors when working with Media Composer 5.0 and Newscutter 9.0. Why am I getting Flamethrower errors after upgrading to Windows 7 (DNA)

There is a known issue with firewire communication in Windows 7. Microsoft is aware of the issue and has provided a hotfix to address it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524249

In order to run this hotfix, you must be on Win 7 SP1 (Service Pack 1) and one of the following Avid Video Editing Products:

    • Media Composer 5.5.2, Symphony 5.5.2, and NewsCutter 9.5.2
    • Media Composer 5.0.3.9, Symphony 5.0.3.9, and NewsCutter 9.0.3.9

    Link regarding the latest patches:
    http://avid.force.com/pkb/LegacySearch?DocId=379435

Login and download the patches from the normal http://www.avid.com/downloadcenter
(Look for the section called - Avid Editor Patches)

    Note!

If you are on a previous editing version and cannot upgrade to one of the above versions, Avid suggests reverting back to the Legacy OHCI drivers to correct this issue.

Right Click on "Computer" go to Manage>Device manager> under IEEE 1394 your OHCI controller(s) should show up. Right click and choose "Update Drivers" then choose browse and then I will select...

Choose the OHCI driver with: (legacy) next to it. Click ok and it will then update the driver and ask that you restart.

Do this for all OHCI devices...

I am on MC 5.5.2 and Windows 7 SP1-64bit Ultimate, and installed the hotfix with a new 1394OHCI.sys driver. However, I did not manage to get this new driver installed. I un-installed the running drivers and tried several methods to get the new driver installed - no success. It is always the old version which gets installed.

    Any idea how to mamage?

Flamethrower some times comes if you leave open the cam/deck and the output from the timeline active.

    I haven't seen it with 5.5.2 yet.

Re: Random 1394 Firewire Flamethower Errors after equipment update (WIN 7 & DNA)

I thought this is a general driver for Firewire controller. as in my Windows\System32\Drivers directory, I only find the new driver 1394OHCI.sys, which was placed theer with the hotfix.

    This is a general driver.

I have tried this myself for my HV30 capture by HDV but didn't work.

The only thing that it worked and I describe it at my MC5 Diary was to reboot the camera.

Re: Random 1394 Firewire Flamethower Errors after equipment update (WIN 7 & DNA)

For anyone else being driven nuts by this, I just found an instant solution for me. TURN OFF any other firewire devices when capturing HDV! I usually have pair of Focusrite Pro40's for audio I/O. Soon as I disconnected those from the system, the Flamethrower error stopped.

I think it also often helps me to turn off machine control and use the internal timecode. Seems to help, anyway. Won't be able to batch capture, but it doesn't seem to abort capture with errors so often. And of course pick the right raster, 1440X1080.

I already use Legacy drivers and didn't need the Windows fix. Hope that helps!
