    Re: xw8400 Upgrade

The problem is that HP never qualified the xw8400 with Windows 7, so there aren't any drives/bios updates on the HP page. [:'(]

    Re: xw8400 Upgrade

You are always better off doing a clean install of a new OS.  You will want to deactivate AVID before you install the new OS so you can reinstall and reactivate it on the new OS.  YOu should bear in mind that AVID only supports the Professional version of Win 7 64Bit not the Premium version.

    Good Luck!

this thread might be of interest fo you since you will probably experience difficutlities with the firewire port if you want to work with Mojo SDI or Adrenaline. See Avid's technote.

Beside that xw8400 and Win 7/64 works flawlessly for me.

The motherboard has 8 RAM slots.  8GB's works well.  There's a chart on the inside of the door that details where the DIMMs go in various configurations.

    Re: xw8400 Upgrade

Google how to install the upgrade version of windows 7 as a clean install.  It's really easy once you know the secret, and it saves a lot of time & money, not to mention dealing with possibility of driver update issues.  (Since you have a qualifying version there is no legal issue) I had no problem finding drivers for my xw8400 after the clean install .  Windows 7 has most things handled.  The Intel site has the MB chip drivers and if you check the device drivers for any remaining yellow ! these can be handled by searching for the Vista driver, as most current Vista drivers also support Windows 7.  Definetely go with 64-bit and pump up your memory as much as your wallet/motherboard can handle.  Don't forget to switch to the legacy 1394 driver if you have a Mojo SDI.  One last thing to do is run the System Prep utility.  There is a Windows 7 specific version coming out very soon, but I found that the older version worked great in turning off unnecessary windows features to give MC as much performance as possible.  My system has been rock solid.

Yup I have 2 Windows 7 64 bit xw8400 and they installed fine. Don't upgrade do a clean install.

Get a new HDD and set it up on that. You can  then re-install all the apps you need and grab anything you forget off the old drive.

Then when it's all setup and stable clone the new install back over your old drive and put it away as the emergency spare.

Watch the firewire card issue that can cause problems. 8GB RAM minimum more if you can afford it.

Who's doing this upgrade?  "Nvidia GeForce GTX 590" isn't supported by Avid.  Only nVidia Quadro FX family cards are.  On the xw8400, how many procs and what speed?

Check out these guys in Tarzana, CA.  All the systems need is the OS, approx $140 from TigerDirect.com.  They have a large stock of "Avid Qualified" nVidia cards as well.

I wouldn't recommend buying into 8400's anymore. Better to go for something a bit newer and faster, even if it's just the 8600.

I did a clean install of ultimate 64.  I moved the avid onto a fire wire drive.  Do I just move it back and open it back up?  What about the 32 programs?

No, you will need to reinstall Avid before you can use it, as you must with most other Windows programs.

You needn't worry about your 32-bit software either.  When you re-install them, Windows will put those programs in the correct directory with the appropriate registry settings for them to run in 32-bit mode on a 64-bit system.

Of course you can't run 32-bit plug-ins inside 64-bit Media Composer.

I want to have 6.0.  I have a free upgrade to 6.0.   Do I still need to install 5.5 and then upgrade or can i go directly to the avid site and download 6.0 with the serial number.

You never have to install a previous version (5.x)and work your way up to a more current version (6.0).  However, some "Patch Releases" require they be installed over the original install, but they'll be point releases of that same version.  The ReadMe will explain when to do that.

Meanwehile, the installer for MC v6.0 and the recently released v6.0.1 are full installers.

You'll download the installer package.  The new Serial Number will be e-mailed to you, or presented to you during the final phase of the online upgrade process.
