In researching the purchase price, the eligibility checker determined I should purchase the Pre v.5 to MC 5.5 - $695/dl. I purchased a new system (see system profile) last year with assurance ($15k+) and recieved the v5.0 update as part of that contract. Contract has lasped and I can't get permission from CFO to re-instate. Since I've been on v5 from its release, shouldn't I be able to use the MCv5 to v5.5 update ($149/dl)?

    BTW, I'm using a dongle.

Yes, you certainly should. All MC 5.0 owners qualify for the $149 upgrade. Those who purchased and registered MC 5.0 between February 8, 2011 and March 8, 2011 qualify for a free upgrade. Are you attempting to purchase from the Avid store or from a re-seller?

From the Avid store. I haven't pulled the trigger just yet. I wanted to make sure there weren't any "Gotchas."

    Thanks for the information!

    Hi there.......

Send me an email off list and let me look at the system ID and follow along to see what you are and are not entitled too.    Gut feel is you are entitled to the 5.0 to 5.5.x upgrade for $149. As long as the 5.0 is registered with Avid then the eligibility checker will see that and you should be fine.

Only those that bought a new 5.0 system or an upgrade to 5.0 between 2/8/11 and 3/8/11 are entitled to a free upgrade.

The only other way to obtain the 5.5 upgrade free is if you buy the Scriptsync, PhraseFind or Scriptsync/PhraseFind bundle on the store.

    I will contact you offline.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying for the "free" upgrade. I realise I'm out of contract and purchased WAY before the eligible times. I'm trying to differentiate between the $149 and $695 prices. Honestly, I will not go with the $695. There isn't enough update to justify the higher price tag. It seems to me that if I'm using v5 legitimately, no matter how I got here (assurance contract, direct purchase), I should be entitled to the $149 update and not subject to the $695 because my dongle was originally pre V5.

Thanks, Marianna! (and a big "Hello" from the DS users list)

Re: Media Composer 5.5.1 NOW AVAILABLE

I notice it has been said that 5.5 will be the last 32-bit version, does this mean that 5.5.2 etc. will be 64-bit only or that all major (6.0, etc.) releases will be 64-bit only?

Still debating whether I should pull the trigger and go 64-bit.

This will be the last release of Media Composer, Symphony, and NewsCutter to be supported as a 32bit application. Next major release whenever that may be.....    patches will most likely be 32 but I can't guarantee the next release after this though....

Ah, okay thanks. Maybe I will try to hold out a little bit longer then. Mostly I'm waiting to make sure all my other programs fully support 64-bit before I make the jump. I tried going all 64-bit about 3-4 years ago and it was a bit messy. Crossing my fingers that things are getting better these days.

Re: Media Composer 5.5.1 NOW AVAILABLE

Q - The only thing in the upgrade bundle that interests me is Avid FX 5.8.3 and the hope that perhaps it addresses some of the functionality features introduced in 5.8.0.  I am currently running 5.8.2 - this "patch" was offered in the download centre when it was introduced as it was a patch rather than an upgrade to AvidFX.  As 5.8.3 would appear to only be a patch again on what I already have, will it be available to download for free?  If so the MC only upgrade will be the purchase?

So do I have to pay £129 to be able to completely turn off the "smart tool"?

Re: Media Composer 5.5.1 NOW AVAILABLE

Actually, Avid has stated that they intend to release patches for 5.0 to address issues like the Smart Tool reactivating. You could look at it another way - £129 in order to get some very nice audio plugins, the ability to manipulate transitions directly from the timeline and the fact that the audio keyframe on/off control is nolonger bound to the SmartTool (which means that I can turnoff the SmartTool and still have audio keyframing active). You might also be interested in the new Find functionality - it's pretty powerful (I'm not talking about PhraseFind but the new Find tool that Avid developed for this version).

To be honest, other than those changes, there's nothing else in 5.5 that I will take advantage of at the moment. Was considering getting an Artist Transport (which is now supported by 5.5) but it's pretty expensive and I can't justify the cost at the moment.

    Cheers

Re: Media Composer 5.5.1 NOW AVAILABLE

Saying that this is the last version to run on a 32-bit platform says only one thing.

This statement cannot be interrpreted to mean that the next version of MC will be a 64-bit application.

32-bit applications run just fine on a 64-bit platform.  I think that it's a little disengenuous for Avid not to clarifiy their statement.

There has been plenty of talk of this statement meaning that the next version of MC will be 64-bit, and I have seen no one from Avid suggest anything to the contrary.

If this statement really means that the next version of MC is going to be a true 64-bit application, then wouldn't Avid be better served by say that instead of what has been said?

In reality, all it means is there will be fewer OS options going forward.

There is no question in my mind that MC runs better on a 64-bit OS, but limitations on addressable memory remain as long as 32-bit code exists.

I will rejoice when MC is a true 64-bit application, but I'm not holding my breath.
