    2.35:1 Anamorphic Reformat in Avid

Am working on a production where they are shooting with an anamorphic lense (1.3 squeeze) on the Arri Alexa camera, which will give a final aspect ratio of 2.35:1. What avid reformat effect should I be using to make this look 'normal' and squeeze the image for the offline?

I'm not sure if there's a 16:9 (1.77) to 2.35 reformat option.  You might need to just apply a 33% stretch for starters and check it against a known round circle (did they shoot a framing chart?).

Do you mean apply a squeeze, as the footage looks stretched when it is loadsed into Avid? Can I apply something like a 16:9 reformat and ammend that? They only shot a framing leader, not a chart.

First off, if you're using MC5, try the settings on the Reformat column in the bin to see if you can get the picture formatted correctly.  If they squeezed the picture on capture, everyone should look like they've grown taller and lost weight rather than the opposite.  Check the size of the image in Quicktime or something and see if it's something other than 1920x1080.

The ProRes QT's I am receiving from set are stretched so zero's (o) look live ovals (0). The image is 1920x1080, and yes everyone does look taller. I just want to squash the image back down to size. Will a pan and scan work, altering the options on it?

(I will also try the reformat column.)

Are you asking to adjust the size for display or final purposes? Any reformat effect you apply will change the aspect of the final file. I don't think that's what you want to do. Is it? Don't you want it to stay 2.35:1 for the final product?

Re: 2.35:1 Anamorphic Reformat in Avid

Well , I'm viewing my footage in 16:9 (by turning my monitors to 16:9) and its still anamorphic. Im outputting DVD's and QT's and need them to be 2.35:1 in 16:9 so I need to squeeze them to look 2.35:1.

Then you'll need to apply an effect to vertically squeeze the image. This will need to be applied to each clip or a higher, blank video track. The resulting image will be letterboxed within a 16x9 screen. If you are supposed to deliver a final master out of your system that maintains the anamorphic aspect (2.35:1), you will need to remove all such effects prior to final output.

Re: 2.35:1 Anamorphic Reformat in Avid

Will a 16x9 Reformat effect be OK to use for this? I wasn't sure seeing as I'm dealing with 2.35:1 anamorphic material. I'm not delivering teh final master output from my system. I'm only dealing with the offline and will be conformed/online elsewhere, so teh effect I am adding won't be permanent and can be removed/changed whenever.

There is no exact preset. Simply use the Resize effect and adjust vertical until it looks right.

Not sure, but the 2.35 mode of HDCAM camcorders used to a a double 16x9 squeeze, so applying a 16x9 LTBX reformat within a 16x9 project would result in the right aspect ratio.

You'd need to find out if the squeeze is indeed 1.30 or that it is in fact 1.33. If the latter, you should be fine using a 16x9 reformat.
