Would that mean that we should be able to use external drives for both PC and Mac systems having them formatted as exFat without the need of any extra apps ?

YES! Apple had to start supporting exFAT because of SDXC cards (new SDHC). These cards are in exFAT format.

I am on it, seems to work, a wet dream has come through, using MDV on my PC for organizing  the files and projects that I wish to use on my Mac, or just to consolidate to the disc from the PC and carry it with me using it with the MBP

Re: Mac OS X update 10.6.5

Seems like this thread became something quite different, sorry Dan, it might be related however.

I am on 10.6.5 now, MC seems to run well, I have just formatted a Wd My Book Studio 2 TB to exFat and moved my Mediafolders back to it from the MBP after having formatted it, I also copied my project folders to it.

Then I disconnected it and connected it to my PC station, opened it up and moved the project folders to my PC documents.

After that, I opened up Avid and went to the " Mac " folder , opened up a project that are only created on my MBP from scratch to finished project, I have it all on my PC now, even the precomputes, all is rendered, I can play it directly.

So, to summarize, I guess we all want 10.6.5 now

    "you tell us"

Being so new to Mac I'm a bit gun shy about this Smile Plus being new new MC that makes me double shy about installing. I guess I could backup everything and try it.

    Thanks

Re: Mac OS X update 10.6.5

Dan, this isn´t about skill, it is about how brave you are and if you are willing to take the chance to loose a couple of days of work, noone can tell how an uncertified OS will work before having tried it and even if it works for some it might spoil the work for others.

I was brave this time however, or maybe the word is " dumb enough " the possibilities to maybe use the same drive on both my Mac and my Pc was something I wanted to try.

It isn´t working perfect however, the screen on my Mac goes black for one or two seconds when opening up and also switching between projects, maybe I will revert back.

So, now you know, if you want to try it for yourself is up to you to decide.

Re: Mac OS X update 10.6.5

I updated to 10.6.5 today and after editing for 5 hours I can confirm that there are the same bugs as before (Bus error at Main Thread) which is what I honestly expected (it would be really sad if Avid's core functions would have been programmed in such a bad style so that a minor(!) system update would cause new bugs or application hangs - after all, everything inside an Avid window is pretty far away from "os x" look, feel, guidelines, controls, buttons, fonts, etc).

I didn't do any exports of timelines or Quicktime related stuff. Because that would be IMHO the most critical part concerning system updates.

Re: Mac OS X update 10.6.5

    Here some useful links:

Apple Release Notes on Mac OS X Update 10.6.5: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4250

Security patches in this update should be the same as in Security Update 2010-007.

    Concerning ExFAT used with Harddisks:

On Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or SP3 you will need the update for the exFAT file system:

Microsoft Windows XP exFAT Update (Knowledge Base article KB955704)

I formatted a new external hdd (Western Digital MyBook) with MBR scheme and exFAT partition - works like a charm for data transfer between Mac and PC. :-)

Much better than FAT or FAT32 - have you ever tried copying a sequence of files (e.g. more than 2000 in a single directory) to an external FAT/FAT32 formatted harddisk connected to a Mac? After 2000-5000 files it becomes really really slow (i.e. less than a file per second)...

    Best regards,

    Bernhard

Just a note: FAT formatted drives - AFAIK - are not supported for use as media drives in Avid. If you want to carry media across platforms, there's still Paragon NTFS-for-Mac and Mediafour MacDrive.
