Avid DS 10.3.1 update is here...

...but did it make me happy?

    I don't do Stereoscopic (yet)
    I don't do RED (yet)
    I don't use any OFX's (yet)
I don't do much conforms (maybe never)

But I DO import h264 files.

So again, did this update make me happy?

Well, I guesss the answer is NOOOOOOOOOO.

I'd hoped that the 3D-DVE's "lost features" would
have been restored like it worked in v7.6.

I'd hoped that they would have fixed the problem
with importing Quicktime's which contains multiple
"soundtracks". Which also worked in v7.6.

    Yeah "small" things like that...

...but I guess they have their own small things
    to take care of.

    Mike;

    I'm on the lucky end of the equation this time;

I have done a small test of 3D, and will be taking on a 3D project VERY soon it seems... So this is just in time for me..

RED-MX is everywhere out here, and given that the only other choices to run it native are Pablo, FilmMaster, Scratch & Baselight, all pretty focused solutions with a limited tool set, it makes for a real advantage in RED heavy markets

BCC's & Furnace Core are running native in DS now, that's the only plug's i use that are also OFX, so i really don't use OFX anymore...

i am not having any issues linking to the h.264 files from my Canon 7D cleanly, but i don't think i have tried to import them.. what's the issue?

On the multi track Qt thing, i can output and capture back Qt's with 8 audio tracks, but have never had one created outside DS handed back to me... one thing i can say is that Scratch, eQ & Smoke can't touch the multi track Qt's DS makes... they gag on them... found this one out the hard way when a client wanted to open up a Qt i created to use as a refrence at another facility, and they didn't have anything that could open it... i thought it a bit funny at the time.... And i'm nice enough to render another one with a stereo mixdown for them...

Personaly i'm all for the existing 3D DVE being sent far away, but i would agree that as long as it's the only answer inside DS, it should at least work as well as it used to... sad as that statment is, as it has never worked very well. That said tho - Nuke runs cleanly on the same machine, and uses the Aja output card to go to the mon and scopes... and is a great 3D compositor... that is what i use these days.

I hope they include a 3D tracker, nodes in CC, darker UI, & supporting the Euphonix surface....

oh man, i thought i was the only one with quicktime audio linking problems...If i have a prores quicktime with more then one stereo audio track, for each track the number of tracks DS links is exponentially more. for example i link a prores quicktime with 8 tracks - and ds shows 64, making the clip totally useless as it takes like 20 seconds to load.

Have you opened a Support Case?  If Montreal don't know about a problem you're having, and don't have source files to use as examples to repro the problem, then they're not going to be fixing it.

Personally, I never receive multi-track Quicktimes so it's not something that I'd have come across myself but the number of file-types that DS now accepts automatically has drastically increased since v10.x

I will have to double-check when I get into work tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure I captured a multichannel Quicktime a few weeks ago with nothing special to report.  Didn't try linking.  Not entirely sure where it came from; the audio was done in Sonar if I'm not mistaken, though I don't know if it made the Quicktime directly or if individual exports were joined up elsewhere.

I'll give it another go and see what happens.

    ManChicken:

...I'm pretty sure I captured a multichannel Quicktime a few weeks ago with nothing special to report.

I haven't looked into what happens when linking
this type of QT-file either, so I haven't been able to
observe this "exponential" increase of audio tracks
    for the linked media.

But when it comes to importing them, I think I can
consider myself a veteran guinea pig. Wink

And as Dermot says in a previous post in this thread,
from the DS you can export "multichannel" QT-files,
may it be a 4-channel file, a 5.1 file or even an
8-channel file and then import them back into the DS
    without problems.

But that's because all these audio-channels reside
in one SINGLE "soundtrack" in the QT-file. The import
problems occur when the file contains MORE than ONE
    "soundtrack".

We often recieve QT-files that contain full mix, M&E-tracks
as well as separate audio-channels for narration, dialogue,
music and effects, Be it stereo or mono.

So these QT-files most of the time contains TWO
Stereo-"Soundtracks" or they might contain ONE
    Stereo-"Soundtrack" and TWO Mono-"Soundtracks".

And importing this type of file into the DS will give me
one or two error dialogues that pops up and informs me
"...that an error occured" and asks me "...if I want to
keep the material captured so far". My impression is
that I get an error dialogue popup per each additional
Soundtrack. That might make sense, that you get an
error for each "track" the DS doesn't understand.
And you might think that you would at least get audio
from the first "Soundtrack" imported but that's not the
case. The import creates video and audio media, but
the audio media only contains silence.

A workaround I've used, to a least get some audio
imported with the image to work with, is to open up
the QT-file in Quicktime Pro and then delete all the
"Soundtracks" except the first one, and then resave
the file as an QuickTime Reference file, just to save
discspace. The "soundtrack" then imports fine.

With these "4-channel files", you can also set the audio
export options in QT Pro to "4 discrete channels" and
export/resave the file . This new QT then contains only
ONE soundtrack and thereby all 4 audio-channels imports
    fine. But you waste discspace.

And the sad thing is that this wasn't a problem in DS v.7.6.
I also have v7.6 training edition installed on my laptop and
there the files imports fine. Sígh...

And yes, I've opened up a case with Avid for this, but which
now seems to be closed with the notification that "...it might
be fixed in a future version"? Hmmm... MIGHT BE...?

And furthermore, when the 4-channel file was imported
we could just copy the 4-channel audiomedia directly from
the Audiostorage to our ProTools system, But now the
ProTools system refuse to import 4-channel WAV's.
    Sigh (again)...

    4-channels AIF's work fine though.

Well, enough words for one day, but I guess the last in
    this matter hasn't been said.

That's probably down to Apple's new SDK that was used to get QT into Win64.

That's Avid-speak for "We've put it on our to-do list"

I guess it's quite possible that the new Win7 version will address all sorts of anomalies.
