    Matrox MX02 Mini

    Hi everyone,

    short question from a newcomer:

Up to now I am an Avid Liquid user with two PC monitors side by side but I already order MC4 (5). I also want to buy (not yet ordered) a Matrox MX02 Mini, but something that I read in a German AVID newsgroup confused me.

In my understanding with that equipment (two PC monitors connected to the graphic card and one HDMI TV monitor connected to the Matrox) I can work with three monitors: two for the normal editing in the MC workspace and the TV monitor as a control monitor for the results. In the newsgroup I read that the 2nd PC monitor and the TV monitor would have the same information (picture). In my opinion that doesn’t make sense.

    Thank you for clarification.

    Klaus-Dieter

    Re: Matrox MX02 Mini

The newsgroup is incorrect - The 2 computer monitors would be the Avid GUI interface. The output through the Matrox MXO2 mini would be VIDEO output in full quality and NOT the computer GUI.

Confirmed. And keep in mind that the Matrox MXO2 mini is for output to HD monitoring only. No capture support directly into Avid.

What they mean is that in a setup with two computer monitors on a supported NVIDIA graphics card, you can use either monitor in Full Screen Mode, leaving the other monitor for tools, timeline and bins.

With MC5, to be released in June, the Matrox MXO2 mini is supported as an output device, meaning that indeed you can use two computer monitors for tools, timeline and bins, and hook up a client monitor or program monitor to the MXO2-Mini's outputs.

The original Matrox MXO used to be able to be an Avid output device by behaving like a Full Screen monitor in Avid. You would hook it up as a monitor. The MXO2-Mini has its own connection to the PC, as far as I understand.

Thank you very much for this very fast response. Fantastic. So my understanding was correct and I can order the Matrox. BTW: MC4 just arrived within two days! Best regards Klaus-Dieter

    Re: Matrox MX02 Mini

How is the MXO2 Mini hooked up to the computer, and then to a monitor.  Do I need a monitor with an HDMI interface, or will an adapter DVI to HDMI suffice?  Or, can the MXO2 output thru the RGB cables to a monitor?

    Thanks,

AFAIK you need a specific PCIe card installed in your computer, that interfaces with the MXO2 Mini.

    Re: Matrox MX02 Mini

The MXO2 Mini adds HD monitoring to your MC. If you use both heads on your graphics cards for your workspace this is un-affected. The Mini works with desktops ot laptos, PC or Macs. It is the must have accessory for MC5!!

One important feature of Matrox MXO2 family of products that Avid editors are sure to appreciate is it's professional monitor calibration tool. Using this tool you can easily turn any flat panel HDTV into a broadcast monitor. Think about that. You can use an off the shelf HD LCD TV instead of spending thousands of dollars on an HD broadcast monitor. With the money you save on glass, you can get that new DSLR you've been coveting so badly!

We hope to have some exciting MC5 / Mini bundles down the road, but nothing we can talk about yet.

Does the MXO2 Mini interface with the computer via the video card, or via its own proprietary PCIe card?

Which really makes me beg the ?, why didn't Avid just make their own BOB for playback only? I imagine they still have charged a small premium over the mini.

    Re: Matrox MX02 Mini

They didn't create their own BOB - nor did they integrate an existing BOB from other software. Think of it this way, why spend the R&D to make a low-price BOB when you can recommend a 3rd party BOB.
