Re: Avid Marketing (DS) vs. Autodesk Marketing

It seems to me the Future of DS needs to be decided at the very top of Avid, Kirk Arnold now needs to take charge of this.

Indeed.  But when we last suggested this, two (non DS-Forum) moderators both accused us of being "snobbish".

It would be very foolish of Avid management to ignore this thread. I am certain that the competitors are busy analyzing not just this thread but all of the other recent posts from the DS core owners.

As far as the marketing is concerned this outcry is not just an expression of vanity from people who have invested a lot of money into a product that has been long neglected.

I often run into post supervisors who outright dismiss DS for no good reason. Just the other day a client was giving me a nonsensical statement about an ease of achieving a certain effect in Media Composer and the horror of attempting the same in the DS. Sadly, he was completely mistaken. I offered to do the job in the DS but the client declined.

Our clients demand certain tools. In some cases they don't but when we offer DS they should not run away from it. They are the ones who need to understand the purpose and the potential of DS. Avid needs to work really hard to return the wow factor that DS once had. Yes, more development is needed but overall, DS is still a strong contender in its class. Now let's accelerate the development and craft a finely tuned marketing mission that will educate our clients.

I'm totally with you on that, Igor.  But didn't we say the same about the Google DS-L?  Dozens (if not hundreds) of posts all saying "Surely Avid can't ignore this list".

But they did.  And still do.

Re: Avid Marketing (DS) vs. Autodesk Marketing

I was just contacted by VCA Fusion in NYC regarding their desire to offer me a free day's training and seminar on Smoke on a Mac and to look at all the other Autodesk options available to us.  I have not heard from the local Avid office or resellers regarding anything Avid in several years.

Re: Avid Marketing (DS) vs. Autodesk Marketing

I was contacted in a very friendly fashion by Autodesk after I installed the Smac demo.  They offered to help me with getting started tutorials or any other assistance I might need.  I declined at this stage and they were happy to back off.

I haven't heard from an Avid marketing person for several years.

So that makes it 2-0 to Autodesk.  Any more?

Same thing here in L.A. I downloaded the Smac demo, but couldn't get it to install ( think because I haven't switched to Snow Leopard yet) and received a call from someone about 3 weeks later. Very cordial and invited me into their place anytime I want to have a look. Funny, I get comments all the time from Autodesk users about what a great product DS is.

Our local resellers will tell you straight out that they think DS is a dead product. They continually have Smac demos though. Maybe someone from Avid should check in with them? Give them some encouragement?

Earth to Avid Marketing.  This is an embarrassing statement for your company.  Get your sh** together or no "cloud" editing is going to save you.
