    Re: Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD

Avid Studio is also an excellent choice. Clearly Windows only software but it's incorrect to say that Avid as a company has ignored AVCHD.

To be honest, in my opinion, you should import using log and transfer on FCP7 and using ama to link to Prores files, and convert those. Believe it or not it's faster than importing into MC directly and you don't have issues with spanned clips.

FCP7 log and transfer is actually an multicore aware app.

You can read about my finding on:

    I hope it helps.

Dear hbrock, up today Sony Pro Camcorders are recording in this format, even in the new super 35mm cams, so when are you going to realize that this is a proffesional video codec?  its not the first time Avid gets late to the party!!!!  we are not talking of export to this codec, just read!!!!   very wrong, dont try to hide the sun with the hands.... its impossible...

    cuatro,

Not sure why you're attacking hbrock in a several-month-old thread.  At the time, AVCHD was not supported.  It is with v6.0.

It's NOT an ideal editing codec...no codec that doesn't have all of the information for each frame is...plain and simple.  Avid has been slower to embrace these Long-GOP formats, that is true.  But again, it is because Avid's historically been involved in high-end film and video.

But Avid is moving in that direction...

At this time how is Media Composer 6.0.1 at importing HD: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (AVCHD) SD: MPEG-2 PS?

I am about ready to purchase a Sony HXR-NX5U but after reading these post it seems the codec is not ideal for editing.  I love my Canon Xf-100 with MXF codec as it imports nicely.

Do I have to transcode in Sorenson Squeeze first?

for any one interested in this old thread. I'm running 6.03 and it AMAs to the NX5 footage with no problems.

Camera looks great. A little noisey in low light but I haven't adjusted the profile yet.

    Re: Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD

I was going to use an AVCHD format like the NX5U uses but I was learly about using a format that was non-editing.  What happens when you composite on top of the AVCHD footage?

Is the NX5U noisy in low light?
