Quicktime export results differ based on length of sequence

Hello all, I'm running some tests to see if I can efficiently replace my analog DVD burner w/ an export and toast method. Time is of the essence so I'm trying to get the export method as close to real time as possible. I'm on 3.1.3, Mac OS 10.5.6, Quicktime 7.6 with a Nitris DX. The project is 1080p/23.98 and shot on film. The Mac Pro is a 2.66 octo-core with 8GB RAM.

So I've been using the most basic "Same as Source" "Use Avid DV Codec" quicktime export settings with all the defaults. The results are encouraging but they differ based on the length of the sequence. I'm using progressively smaller sub-sequences of the same sequence and they're all in the same project. Through process of elimination I have determined that the magic length is about 1 minute :46. Below that length the sequence exports as expected: at full 1920x1080 and my unrendered banners (a 1.85 matte and a simple "property of" title) rendered fine in the final quicktime. It takes about 2/3 of real time. Not bad.

Above that 1:46 threshold the size of the file shrinks to 1280 x 720 (which doesn't really matter as I'm eventually compressing it to a SD DVD) and those unrendered banners don't render through to the quicktime, which is critical. These take about 40% or real time to export. Quicker but flawed.

I use the exact same export settings. I've tried both the menu and drag and drop.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Quicktime export results differ based on length of sequence

Just noticed that the default "same as" export window changes based on this length issue. For the shorter sequences the "Display Aspect Ratio" panel at the bottom of the main window shows the familiar 601 (1920x1080), 4:3 (1440x1080) and 16:9 (1920x1080) settings. The longer sequences show DV (1280x720), 4:3 (960x720) and 16:9 (1280x720) options. Saving the setting under another name doesn't help.

Just to clarify, is your what kind of media is in your sequence?  Is it all the same?

Just making sure that by sub-sequencing you're not eliminating clips that are a different resolution or type of file, which could effect things.
