Unable to cut and paste Japanese text into title tool

I am creating a series of captions for a DVD these appear in both English and Japanese. I have had the captions translated into a document. For some reason I am unable to paste these into the title tool, even though I have a Japanese font selected when I go to paste them into the tool. All I get is a line of question marks.

The document I am pasting from is in RTF.

I'm working on Vista 64bit and MC v3.1.1

Any suggestions or help greatly apreciated!

    Thanks.

    Freshstyles,

Try pasting them into the Marquee Tool instead.

The Title Tool has some limitations with Japanese/ Korean and Chinese.

Also, if you are not running a Japanese OS, you will at least need to have Microsoft IME installed, and the Japanese mode active.

    Just another thought,

    AvidDVD can handle Japanese subtitles.
If I am using subtitles I always add them in Avid DVD, not in MC.

Hi Douglas - thanks for the quick response.

I am creating captions as opposed to subtitles which appear in the applicable language - so the marquee / title tool are the way forward.

I have tried what you suggested in Marquee with the IME switched to Japanese, although all I seem to be getting is a series of blocks instead of question marks?!

    What am I ding wrong?!!

    Cheers

Re: Unable to cut and paste Japanese text into title tool

    It could be the font.

If it is a true japanese font (I can't remember the font suffix for the moment) I think it will only work with a Japanese OS.

Have you tried using one of the 2 Windows fonts that IME has as standard?
    Do they work?

Now I am off to my futon, so I can't help you more for a few hours.

Hopefully someone else who knows about this can help out, in the meantime.

    Regards,

Hi Douglas - got it sorted and all's good in the Marquee tool a few resarts and tweeks later.

I'm running the IME and switching to Japanese to cut from the RTF document and paste into the Marquee tool- the standard MS Mincho font is selected first and looks pretty good.

    Thanks again for your help!

Re: Unable to cut and paste Japanese text into title tool

I, too, am having problems with getting Japanese into the marquee tool, but it's only one character (as far as  I know) that won't copy over.  It's the character that looks like a dash and has unicode 30FC.  It's called "Katakana-Hiragana Prolonged Sound Mark."  I talked to avid tech support and it sounded like they knew about this problem but if anyone knows anything more than that, please let me know.
