24 FPS HD Digi --> 25 FPS SD PAL Digi --> 24 FPS Project and EDL for Reconform

    Hi guys,

We received a feature film on a 24 fps HD Digi (may be 23.97 exactly) that we downcoverted to a 25 fps SD PAL digi so that we could take the footage into our Avid Adrenaline System (which does not support HD footage) and create a 2-min trailer. We imported the footage into a 24 fps project, from which we would then export a 24 fps EDL that we could use to reconform the HD footage in an online suite. However, it doesn't work! Please could you advise if this is a possible workflow, and if so, how to make it work? If not, what would you do? We've also tried exporting a 25 fps EDL and using that to reconform the HD footage from (setting the HD deck on 25 fps) - however, we have about a 22-frame drift by the end.

    Many thanks for you help!

Re: 24 FPS HD Digi --> 25 FPS SD PAL Digi --> 24 FPS Project and EDL for Reconform

Is your digi downconversion 25i or 25psf?  This will make all difference to your EDL. Were you working in a 24p project or 25i?

Ideally if you receive a HD Master at 24p or 23.98p, you should get it downconveted at 25psf (not 25i) and then capture this picture into a 24p project which will then play it back at 24 frames per second - from there you can make a straight up 24 fps edl, and everything should be in sync. If your downconversion was at 25i then you need a 25 fps edl, and let your online guy do the 24 fps tc conversion on their machine.

Also your 22 frame drift could be one of two things, either the difference between a 24fps conversion and a 23.98fps conversion, or some dropped frames during the transfer process.

Also you should probably post these questions on the Avid Film and 24p forum.

    Hi Jake,

Many thanks for your response. Apparently, we did the downconvert as 25psf and were working in a 24p project. However, the 24p edl simply doesn't work!

    Thanks,

    Katie
