    Re: New Mac Pros?

I saw an new Nehalem 8 core working with 3.5.1 at a post facility this week and it was incredibly fast. I think people are buying them. If you need to, you have to.  What's avid going to do . . . NOT approve them.  I have a new 17" Unibody 2.93 and it runs 3.5.1 just great with a Mojo using a 800 to 400 cable.

    COOL!   Big Smile

I know Avid needs to get a hold of them to test them etc. With NAB happening this week I hope to pin them down.

I actually bought the old MBP 2.6 so that I could run Avid on it. Everything runs fine on it except the Kepsan doesn't work. Did you get Keyspan to work on the new MBP?

    Looks like I was wrong.

    - 6GB of DDR3 ECC SDRAM (6x1GB)

    - 640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s

    - NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB

    - One 18x SuperDrive

    -

    Apple Mac Pro Configuration Two

    Notes

Avid will not support the single Quad-Core models, or the dual Quad-Core 2.26GHz model

    (Wonder why this is?)

Configuration testing was done with Mojo-SDI, Adrenaline, Mojo DX, and Nitris DX.

Qualified local storage includes Avid VideoRAID® ST, VideoRAID SR, and VideoRAID RTR.

    Re: New Mac Pros?

I'm new to the software MC game, but I was considering getting the Quad-Core model, with 6 gigs of RAM and the nVidia card.  Will this just plain not work, or is it just officially not supported?  I won't be running Mojo or Adrenaline.

    Re: New Mac Pros?

Good question. I can't imagine why it wouldn't work.  I guess Avid maybe streamlining the models they will "officially"  support.  I use a new 17" Unibody that is not yet officially supported and it works great.

    Re: New Mac Pros?

I purchased a new MacPro Nehalem 2.26 dual Quad core before Avid approved the 2.66 and the 2.93 dual Quads. I had no choice, I had to get a new machine at the time. I just couldn't see spending another $1400 for the 2.66. Does anyone know why the 2.26 models are not approved? Is there something inherently different in the architecture? Do I now have to sell my 2.26 and get a 2.66 or 2.93 machine?

Any official input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

No special reason. We just didn't have one in-house to test. Being a Mac, it will probably be just fine.

    Re: New Mac Pros?

I would give it a try and see if it works. I also have a hard time justifying 5-6,000 on a new computer.

This isn't official, but if it works--it works Smile

The MACS are getting more expensive, not cheaper, like the PCs.

    Re: New Mac Pros?

Thank you BLKDOG. I feel a lot better now. Having an unsupported machine made me feel a little uncomfortable. I will proceed to do testing on the 2.26 dual Quad model, and use it with Media Composer 3.5  I will report any unusual machine related issues.

    Thank you

I use one with just the software and it works oke. We only wait with the Nitris dx untill the 2.26 versions are supported by Avid.

BLKDOG - Are there any intentions to get one in house and test it?

Sure, $1400 isn't that much on a per case basis, but for hundreds of people to have to spend that extra cash...you know what I'm saying?

    Re: New Mac Pros?

You know I've been thinking about this all day and I think Avid had a little bit of a strategy here.  Apple normally gives products a speed bump before a full refresh.  So if you qualify the top top of the line, it is more likely that those models will be sold for the longest amount of time.

I just gets painful when you start pricing out multiple edit suites in a facility.
