    output 23.98psf to 59.94 with cross-convert?

you know when you're sitting at home after a long day, and a potential problem pops into your head but you're nowhere near the system to test things out....?

problem: I have a show at 1080p 23.98psf and I'll need to make two masters, one is 23.98 and one is 59.94 1080i. I know the cross-convert out of the Nitirs can play out 59.94 1080i from my project, but is there anything I need to know about the Digital Cut that is out of the ordinary? How do I properly generate 59.94 timecode on the HDcam SR deck? OR do I need to do a 'crash record' option on the Digital Cut tool? Will the Avid even let me sellect a 59.94 deck as an available machine to use?

I'm confident that I can play the proper video out with the Nitirs cross-convert, but the idea of mastering a tape outside of my 'assemble edit' comfort zone scares me. Please tell me this is a common thing, that I just haven't had to do yet.

    thanks

In the Digital Cut tool I have 1080i 59.94 as an output option in a 1080p 23.98psf project so you should be good.

    Re: output 23.98psf to 59.94 with cross-convert?

here's an idea (a time consuming one) that might work:

play out my 23.98psf timeline to HDCam SR, then reload that SR though the machines format converter into a 59.94 project. Then after I cross my fingers and whisper silent prayers, see if my times actually line up and generate my new master in 59.94 from that new timeline. Yes it's a run around, but it could work.... maybe?

That will work. Or, if you have an FCP system with a Kona card you can cut out one pass...

    Re: output 23.98psf to 59.94 with cross-convert?

Hey I want to do the same thing

I have a nitris DX mac system

I want to output to 59.94 HDCAM

    My 24p sequence has

29.97 gfx  imported into the 24p project

30i video imported files into the 24p project

and then just 24p DVCPRO HD footage

So if I do a cross convert layback will everytign look right or will the graphics look all studdery and whatnot?

The other scenario is take al the gfx and 30i imports out  and do a quicktime reference of teh sequence then import to a 59.94 project reimport gfx and 30i clips and then cut them back in and lay back

Any thoughts guys? Need to know within the next 5-6 hours.

    Re: output 23.98psf to 59.94 with cross-convert?

Ok, here is my 2 cents:

Since you say you have an SR deck, output the 1080p 23.976 master to SR, set the SR up to 1080i 59.94 and play to second SR deck.  Done.  No second SR deck?  Dig back to Symphony in new project and play back.

Why not use the Symphony Nitris to convert?  It is not really designed to do so for production quality.  There have been issues with it keeping a proper cadence.  I would not trust it.  The SR deck will do the job perfectly.  You can totally control the cadence.

    Re: output 23.98psf to 59.94 with cross-convert?

    I'm not using SR

The deck I'm using is the HDW 500  Sony

And I rent it so I get it for an hour to lay back and thats it so no testing time. (I know how to use it though)

But yeh this sequence has to be ready to go out of my AVID when that deck arrives. So what do you suggest. Cross convert out of the Nitris DX  or  do the whole  export quictime ref, import to 59.94 cut in all gfx and stuff again whatnot

    thanks Jef,

that is exactly what I did. the one kink was that the format convert make the entire thing come in 1 frame late, but that's why we have 2-beeps right? Other than that, it worked perfectly.

You can adjust the TC conversion of the 5500.

It is in the TC Alt menu.

    Re: output 23.98psf to 59.94 with cross-convert?

You need to set the time code sense menu to FC not Line then you won't be 1 frame off.  On the 5500 it is menu A10.  On the 500 decks there may not be this option it can be added with updated software and a board revision or swap.  I had a 500 that didn't have the option and was told it needed a new board to have the option.  Funny thing was the Sony engineer I spoke with had worked on the deck I was renting and he knew he had shipped the board to the previous owners of the deck but it apparently never got installed.
