Re: Avid VideoRAID, UL5D, and Final Cut Pro?

    Hey Derrick,

Is there a reason the card should be in slot 4 vs. slot 2? Both are marked for 4x on my PPC G5. Thanks for the help!

When you launch Atto Config tool, do you see the ul5d and both channels in the left column? attached jpg is what shows up for me. If the card and channels show up but no drives, I would think that the videoraid might not be configured correctly. Double check that Avid Mac is selected. If it is set to any of the other PC settings it will not show up on a Mac, I know because I've tried it before.

Re: Avid VideoRAID, UL5D, and Final Cut Pro?

The slot config deals with lane bandwidth. I'm on a Mac Pro and I was having problems a while ago getting full transfer speeds for the SCSI card. The problem was due to incorrect slot placement. In your case, the drives are not even being recognized so that's not the problem.

    Hi Abeyta,

Yea, I tried reconfiguring the videraid for mac a number of times, even internally formatting them using ZTerm and Hyperterminal. Still a no go. I'm starting to think that this card is just not functioning properly (the UL5D). The array lights don't even flash on startup. Very strange. Thanks for the input!

Re: Avid VideoRAID, UL5D, and Final Cut Pro?

    Hey guys!

I'm making some progress! I'm finally able to see the array with the ATTO Configuration Tool! Now on to step 2: I still can't see the array anywhere else. I can't mount it or anything. Does anyone have any suggestions with how to get this to mount as a disk now that I can see it? Thank you all again for your help and generous sharing of knowledge!

So Express Stripe still does not see it?

You can try Disk Warrior or try to low level format the drive via Terminal.

Re: Avid VideoRAID, UL5D, and Final Cut Pro?

Sadly, neither Express Stripe or Disk Warrior see it; only ATTO Confi Tool. It hasn't even been given a disk BSD name in System Profiler, but it's there under parallel SCSI. How does low level formatting via Terminal work if I don't have a disk BSD identifier? Thanks for the reply, Dom!

ok, you can see the arrays in Atto config, what happens if you launch express stripe program, can you still see the arrays? If not, I don't know what else to suggest. Sorry!

Are you sure all the lights on the back of the unit are green? all 10 drives, both raid controllers and both terminators? Have you tried changing the SCSI ID's? I have one set to "6" and the other set to "B"

Nevermind - don't low level format it via Terminal. It may not be a good idea.

If you have to a PC (don't need to mount the drive)-

    try this

Remember that low level format takes a long time.

Also check the Flash ROM version on the Atto card with the config tool. I am using flash version "February 18, 2008" You can download from Atto's website if needed.

That's the flash version I have; and sadly I don't have access toa PC with a port for the card, meaning I can't plug in the SCSI side of things. Guess that means no low level formatting via PC for me. Any other ideas?

You don't need to connect the drive via SCSI. It just needs the serial port so you can access it via Hyper Terminal.

Edit: it seems the formatter requires SCSI.

Yes, and sadly I don't have another box to plug into for trying it out. When you hooked your array up to your card, you plugged each side into the card on the two channels and then booted up, right, Dom? Did OS X see the drives right away or did you have to search for them?

Re: Avid VideoRAID, UL5D, and Final Cut Pro?

We usually go single channel for each box as we tend to to connect 2 boxes (20 drives total) for each system. To do that you will need an additional short SCSI to connect the the top and bottom part then terminate.

The drives shows up in Disk Utility and format from there. We 2 connected right now in an MC/FCP workstation. Editor is using it with MC with XDCAM EX footage.

Drives are configured via Hyper Terminal before we attach it to the Mac as it is easier that way.

And when you configured the array, you just used the Avid Mac option, or did you do something different?
