Transcode error - SWCompCvtr Out of Memory

    Good afternoon to all.

I've searched the fora and was not able to find a situation which directly addresses my problem.

I am attempting to transcode my media library from OMF 1:1 to OMF DV25 in order to free up drive space.

Clips of short duration (five minutes) transcode without error.  Clips around 30 minutes long cause the transcode to terminate with the following error:

"SWCompCvtr:: Preload: Out of memory: allocation failed on allocating main unalligned 30 megabyte buffer"

    My system specs are:

    • HP WORKSTATION XW8000
    • 3 GB RAM
    • Avid Xpro v 4.6
    • 80 GB internal system drive (not used for media files)
    • 500 GB internal project drive (not used for media files)

    Additional setup information:

    • Source Clip: Named "8043 01" of duration 29:55:09
    • Media files: 18 media files which make up this clip
      •  Volume in drive F is ARCHIVE 3
         Volume Serial Number is D0E3-1DA8
      •  Directory of F:\OMFI MediaFiles

    • Source drive: a LaCie 1TB external daisy chained via FW800 through a second LaCie drive which is not turned on.
    • Destination drive: a G-Raid 1TB external drive which is daisy chained to the source LaCie
    • Transcode settings:
      • CREATE NEW SEQUENCE=ON,
      • VIDEO AND AUDIO SAME DRIVE=ON (although these clips have no audio),
      • CREATE NEW SEQUENCE=ON,
      • DO VIDEO CONVERSION=ON,
      • TARGET VIDEO RESOLUTION = DV 25 411 OMF
      • OMF=ON
      • DO AUDIO SAMPLE RATE CONVERSION=OFF
      • DO AUDIO SAMPLE BIT DEPTH CONVERSION=OFF
      • DO AUDIO FORMAT CONVERSION=OFF
      • Space required shows 6,613 MB. Space available shows 950,034 MB.
      • COPYING MEDIA FILES DIALOG
        • Master clips are relinked to media on target drive=ON

At this point the transcode begins with the status box showing transcoding x of y clips.  It seems to get through the first umpteen media files without issue.  Then it craps out with the error above.

    Monitoring Task Manager shows

    • CPU usage consistently between 45% to 52%
    • Physical Memory
      • Total 3,144,676 K
      • Available 1,942,440 K at time of failure - seems to be plenty

The frustrating thing about this is that the first lot of files which have already been transcoded are never saved so I have to start over.

I have tried several different 30 min clips and gotten the same error every time.

I looked through Avid settings and Help to see if there were any settings for buffers which might be tweakable but I didn't find anything that seemed relevant.

Restarting the program didn't make any difference either.

Are there settings I can change for windows memory handling that would matter?

Are there setting in Avid that need to be tweaked?

Are there issues with a maximum number of media files which Avid can handle transcoding? (this seems doubtful because the failures do not always occur after the same amount of transcoded files)

Does anyone have any idea of what may be causing this?  I have four TB of media files which need to be transcoded and this is really putting a damper on my mood for the day.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Transcode error - SWCompCvtr Out of Memory

Hmm sounds like some memory leak there. As i recall there was an issue with 4.6 (and prior versions) .. do you have any means or possibilities to try this on a more recent version?

    Hi, Menno.

Thank you for your fast reply!

A colleague has agreed to give me access to his 5.x system.  I will be certain to report the result.

Success!!!  The 30 minute clip transcoded without error.

The specs for the test system:

    • HP Workstation xw4100
    • XP Pro 5.1 SP2
    • Total RAM 2,620,876
    • Xpress Pro 5.2.4

I didn't mention before, but my system runs XP Pro SP1.  Do you think that might have anything to do with this problem?

Thanks again for your timely assistance!

Re: Transcode error - SWCompCvtr Out of Memory

4.6 is supposed to run on SP2 but i doubt if that is the issue here. 4.6 was really stable and worked perfect as i have used it but as said i do remember some memory issues.. tracking back to those posts would be a challenge Smile
