    Success!

I ended up taking the plunge and ordering my software yesterday, and I was amazed to get it today.  Installed the program, and as I expected it wouldn't run on my native GeForce card.  I soft modded it into a Quadro NVS 290 and presto!  Everything appears to be working great now.  Thanks for all your help guys I definitely could not have done this without you!

Does modding it into a Quadro cause it to act like a "true" Quadro in the sense that it loses performance in other (non OGL) areas?

    Re: Graphics Card Question

Has anyone here tried the "512MB" version of the GF 8800GTS?  I know that this card uses the G92 chipset rather than the G80 chipset found on the 320MB and 640MB version of the 8800GTS, and since I don't see a "G92" version of Quadro cards (I only see "NV92" Quadros), it appears that this card might have to work natively with MC3.0 in order to work.  I've seen several 8800GTS posts, but as far as I can tell, none were the "512" version.

I know that teh GF7xxx series works natively with MC3, so I'm curious if the G92 version of the 8800 (8800GTS 512MB) might also work.

    Thanks,

    Larry

    Re: Graphics Card Question

New Geforce drivers were released yesterday (Monday, June 23) -- 175.19.  I was curious if anyone had tried them with an 8800 series card to see if the newer drivers fixed the issues that currently require soft modding 8800's to Quadros.

    Thanks,

Running Vista 32 with an 8800gt, had the same hangup during avid startup on the acpl screen, unable to softmod as it's a G92 chip (and rivatuner doesn't support any of the G9X chips).  Updated today with the newest Geforce drivers and the problem persists.  Still waiting for some kind of solution so I can start using 3.0.

Thanks for posting -- I was wondering about the G92 chipset cards, so your post was helpful.

I'm wondering if a decent workaround would be to just install two cards in the system at the same time -- i.e. the 8800 and a lower end Quadro -- and just disable the 8800 when running Avid.  In other words, use the Device manager to select "Do not use this device (disable)" for the Geforce card.  This way, you'd have a less expensive Quadro for Avid without the Geforce interfering, and you'd still have the much higher power of the Geforce for everything else.

I'd be very interested to hear If anyone has any thoughts on this.  A similar discussion was started a while back, but it was dropped because MC 2.8.3 ended up working with Geforce cards.

    Thanks,

    Larry

    I believe the Quadro FX 3700 uses the G92.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_quadro and http://ads-spot.com/nvidia-launches-quadro-fx-3700.html

And looking over the specs for Rivatuner, it should support the G92s and up to 175.12...have i misread?  i sure hope not cause i;ve got a brand new 512 mb 8800GTS (G92) sitting here waiting for my Avid upgrade to 3.0 sometime very soon.

On this note, I'm a bit unclear about the chipset information on the techarp site.  The 8800GTS 512 is listed as "G92," but the FX3700 is listed as "NV92GL."  Is this the same as the "G92," which the wiki article obviously implies, or are there some differences?

    Thanks,

    Larry

    Re: Graphics Card Question

In my experience so far with trying to softmod the 8800gt, the problem is within rivatuner.  There is no NVstrap tab within the quick modification area, thus no way of sofmodding the 8800gt to the 3700fx.  I know within the rivatuner documentation it says that the G92 chipset is supported, but within other forums on the guru3d site, the rivatuner moderator has explicitly said that as of right now softmodding on an 8800gt is not supported by rivatuner.  This has been my experience, and unless someone has other information on a workaround, there's no way for me to softmod the 8800gt using rivatuner.

    Re: Graphics Card Question

after posting last night i did some research, and you're correct.  there's no way to mod a 8800GTS into a Quadro.  but is that necessary to get avid to work?  it seems from the other posts, that all that's required is using riva tuner to force OpenGL 1.5.  is this correct?

and which will offer better performance.  an 8800GT soft moded to a Quadro or an umodded 8800GTS or 9800GTX?
