    I kind of did... Why?

It's supposed to get much better with version 3.0 and support more formats and allow you to mix and match.

    amitzinman:

Take a look at the video I posted about 3.0 - the link is on page 13 of this thread.

Hope you noticed the section demonstrating different formats on the same timeline. As well as thin raster support for multiple formats in the same timeline.

Just wanted to note that according to the 3.0 readme, surround 5.1 is now supported. FINALLY. Although the name "Dolby" is suspiciously absent (!)

...Larry, can you expand on this ? Can you create the 5 + 1 directly in MC or do you still have to create the AC3 with another special audio program ? We do a load of DVD authoring here.

I wish I could expand, but it only appears in "What's new" with the following description:

"Changes have been made to allow support for Surround Sound. This feature is supported with applications using the Avid Nitris DX hardware. See 'Working with Surround sound or 5.1 Audio' in the Help".

I assume that means the onboard help that comes with the 3.0 software. Unless someone has access to and can post from that help info?

....It would be interesting to know if a 5.1 surround mix could be created and output to DVD straight from the MC 3.0 timeline.

AFAIK - no. What you can do is export a multi channel QT and then use Sorenson to do AC3 encoding.

Adn regarding surround sound support this supposedly allows 5.1 monitoring via Nitris FX hardware. Not sure what that means exactly (maybe multi channel patching through LFE, RS, LS, RF, LF, etc.)

This is very interesting indeed. I hope it works.

    AndrewAction:

My point is the $ 995 for MCA against $295 for MC soft not the grace period.

The stupid situation is that I can upgrade Pro to MC soft for $395  (download). Get MC3 free  and plug in the Adrenaline.   Or pay $995 to upgrade my MCA dongle.  No evidence of "new thinking" going on in Avid about this.

Amen, Andrew. This differential in upgrade price between MCA and MC soft is absolutely ridiculous and needs to be addressed immediately. I have two dongles. One that's an upgrade to 'soft' from XPro and the other is a MCA dongle. I have to pay 3 times more to make one of them do the exact same thing. What the **** is up with that?

    Avid?

Yes, and I am very excited and waiting to see how it works on a software only MC on PC with no PCI-E card.

I am upgrading to Vista 64-bit and 4GB RAM to see if it improves things.

    Waiting for tomorrows revelations Chris.

Mind you we were asked to wait after NAB two years ago and the status quo remained. Then again after last years NAB we were asked to be patient only to have status quo drag on in utter silence.....till tomorrow of course. Hmm

Well, some vague reference to support contracts starting as low as $99. Could that be the beginning of good news? I hope so. Anybody?

For Xpress DV EOL'd 2 years ago perhaps?? Smile

4am Tuesday and the deafening sound of Avid trumpeting new fair pricing was well worth the wait.  Darn was that the alarm!!  sigh...must have been dreaming.
