    24p project, miniDV, 1394, adrenaline

anyone had success capturing a 24fps miniDV tape (29.97 with standard pulldown) over firewire, through the adrenaline, in a 24p film project? Tried everything to no avail.

    dual 2.7 G5, MC 2.7.3
Film setting on standard pulldown (tried all other options)
    Audio at 48k
    pulldown enabled and disabled
    capturing at DV25

I am assuming this has to do with pulldown and sample rates. It can be done over SDI but not FW. Does anyone know why? thanks, jdw

What is "to no avail?" What is happening or not happening so that we can better diagnose? For starters, are you in a 23.976p project?

Re: 24p project, miniDV, 1394, adrenaline

I just did some more tests--It will work in a 23.98 project but not a 24p project. I think it is a pulldown issue where the audio lives on tape at 48k with 29.97 video. When capturing, the video and audio need to be sped up that .1% (basically 23.98-->24 and 48k-->48.048). The Avid won't do it...unless I am missing something here.

If this is footage captured with a DV camcorder in a 24p mode, it is actually 23.976p, and you should work in a 23.976p project.

Video is not being sped up during capture, not even in true 24p projects. It's just a matter of actual picture speed (23/24fps) in relation to the audio clock (48K).

Re: 24p project, miniDV, 1394, adrenaline

Actually, this miniDV footage lives on tape at 29.97 and is flagged as "24." Although 23.98 is its "native" speed, we need this footage in a 24p project--regardless of what we "should" work in.
So what we need the Avid to do is what I mentioned in my previous post--change the speed of video from 23.98 to 24 by increasing it .1% and doing the same change for audio.

Since FireWire is only a transport medium, there is no place to do the sample rate conversion in order to create 24/48Khz from 23.976/48kHz sources. In order to work in a 24pNTSC project you would need to capture via a Mojo as analog or via SDI.

Thanks Michael, that is what I was thinking, but I was hoping the adrenaline would be able to take that FW information and manipulate it. Maybe some time in the future...

You can do the same thing with Adrenaline via analog or SDI.
