    Importing Files

Maybe it's just me... but I'm friggin' sick of how Avid handles importing video files.  It is the most finicky part of my Avid these days.  Bus errors are rampant when importing.  Select 12 clips and drag em into the bin... no way.  Guaranteed segmentation fault or bus error.  Gotta do em' one at a time and save after each one.  I just imported a 16 minute file, 3-1 resolution, that was originally an export from the exact same Avid, SAS, 3-1.  Blammo... bus error.  OK... changed the import resolution to 2-1.  It went in, but would only play back the first 5 minutes,  then the video stopped and the audio kept going.  You know what happened next... blammo... bus error.

Fast import... remember that... wish it was still around when importing 601 files.

Color me sick and tired of this.  Importing and exporting files is a way of life at this point.  Tape masters... who makes those anymore... I make full rez QT files.  And I need to import them time and again.  Importing video files right now is a chore for me that requires patience, a tender touch and constant saving.

Am I alone with this issue?

    Re: Importing Files

No, you are not alone. We are not that affected by imports, but I was told that is Avid's #1 concern. We are still getting consistent bus errors and segmentation faults from mundane stuff. Because Avid has acknowledged these issues, all we can do is sit around and wait for them to figure out what is wrong with their product. It is very frustrating.

    Re: Importing Files

Perhaps my Export bus errors are related to the Import errors.

Looking at Permissions -- FCP, etc. are Owned by System and Shared to Admin.

MC alone is Owned by Steve and Shared to Staff.

    Are my MC Permissions correct?

No they are not correct Steve.  Read my first post in this thread and make the adjustments.

    Bus errors and audio tool

I got a couple of bus errors yesterday. What was I doing different from the other days (6 weeks) without bus errors? Well, I was working with the Audio Tool opened as I spent some time ajusting levels.
It's not the first time I notice that I get bus errors when I left (or forgot) that window opened.

Yeah...  without any exact evidence, I can say that I feel like some of my bus errors also coincide with the audio tool being open.

Re: Bus errors and audio tool

Maybe something to explore... As I said, I'm cutting a long form, it's the 8th week without any problems. I start to use the Audio Tool, bang: two bus errors within 15 minutes - one of them whilst working on a music track imported and not digitized (other thing to explore?).
If I close the Audio Tool after using it, no pb. It takes a few extra clicks and a few seconds to open it again - though it's quicker than relaunching!

Re: Bus errors and audio tool

    OK.

    MC2.7.7. MP, 10.4.8

Constant Bus errors on startup, when Avid is scanning and indexing drives.  I take all drives offline, MC starts up.  However, when I try to mount any one of the drives, I now get a Segmentation Fault error.  Thoughts?  I have trashed databases, MC state, etc.  Other ideas?

I was working on these spots with no problm yesterday.  Fired the system up this morning and the only oddity is that is seemed a couple audio files went offline upon start up, so I tried to relink.  Nothing happened on relink, so I rebooted software and now can not get in.

No documents in front of me Scott... but that OS seems a tad old no?  What version of QT too? All that said, if I were you, I would uninstall 2.7.7, manually remove all the Avid files in the library->receipts folder and re-install 2.7.7.

Re: Bus errors and audio tool

did the reinstall with no luck.  OS is fine according to Marianna.

Fixed it, however.  Somehow when I did the re-link attempt, some other media file in the folder became corrupt, or at least looked corrupt to the software.  I moved everything but the current projects media files into a new folder, then re-booted and it worked on both drives.

    thanks...

just want to make certain you mean the audio tool (for monitoring levels), not the audio mix tool (for adjusting levels). Thanks, Jason

No I meant the Audio Mixer, the one for adjusting levels...

Re: Are You Getting Bus Errors?

I have just installed 2.8 on a mac pro 2x quad 2.8Ghz, os 10.4.11, ati radeon 2600, and get the message "bus error in thread main thread" while the application starts. I get this message when the avid startup (black) screen get to the "initializing openGL effects" point.

    Any ideas ?

It sounds as if the system does not like the video card. I know people who are using this card so I think it SHOULD be OK but, is this a new card or a used one?

Hmm, I thought these bus errors went away in 2.7
I've just upgraded to 2.8 (from 2.6.6) and here it is the first day of shooting and I'm already getting them. I was tweaking scaling in the 3D effect, I believe.
