What to use for H.264 encoding....

What is everyone using to create h.264 movies?  My current workflow is to export a Quicktime Reference and use MPEG Stream Clip to compress it.

This workflow works, but it's really slow.  Media Encoder does not support QT Reference so I've ruled that out.

Also, since I'm using an Imac Pro with the Pro Vega 56 graphics card, I should be able to take advantage of the card for hardware encoding.  Radeon is very vague on how to take advantage of this....very.  Is anyone out there utilizing the Radeon Card for encoding?

    Thanks,

Compressor or Handbrake are the best options IMO.

Shutter Encoder. Made by editors for editors. Also does rewraps to differenr containers.

As for QT Ref, you will at some point have to start to live without that. Do an internediate export from MC, using its new UME option to create either a MOV or Op1A MXF in DNx or ProRes. Very fast.

Re: What to use for H.264 encoding....

For web-bound work, my normal output procedure now is to export an mxf op-1a file at a suitable DNxHD or DNxHR bitrate and then use Adobe Media Encoder to create h.264 mp4s.

That said, Avid will now directly output h.264 into a .mov container but audio encoding remains limited to pcm.  With 32-bit quicktime no longer in the loop it's much faster than before.  Besides the labelled h.264 output, any of the Panasonic AVC options are h.264 under a different name

I don't believe UME is an option since I'm using v 8.9.4.  I'm locked in to using the software version that the show is using.

    Thanks...

Thanks....I tested this and Media Encoder ripped through it.  This seems to be the ticket unless someone has a  better workflow!

    Thanks!

Would do a +1 for Shutter Encoder as not everyone has access to Adobe Media Encoder (Oh, I hate subscription only).

MC 2020 has a native H.264 export option. Limited control but great for screeners.
