    Does Avid accept H265 yet?

Just tried linking to my new drone's H265 footage (HEVC) and it doesnt even see it :-(

    Thanks

Re: Does Avid accept H265 yet?

I tried FFMpeg but this will not convert to DNX or any pro intra codec, same as Hanbrake.

Its a but frustrating as DJI say in the manual that Premiere and FCP support H265 10 bit log wrapped as MP4 - but Avid is yet to catch up?

    Thanks for any advice.

I'd try converting with Shutter Encoder. It's free and good.

Re: Does Avid accept H265 yet?

Cheers Carl - very much appreciated mate!

It works but produces DNxHR HQX intra files 10 times bigger than the H265.  These barely play! It ups the 10 bit source to 12 bit (which isnt really possible of course) creating huge files and pointless fro my 10bit Symphony?  Anyone know why there isnt a 10 bit option in DNxHR?  Same as source bitrate...?  Thanks

DNxHR HQX DNxHR High Quality (12 bit) 12 4:2:2 5.5:1
DNxHR HQ DNxHR High Quality (8 bit) 8 4:2:2 4.5:1

Hi DIESELE, your comment made me try for myself.

Not sure if this really helps, but consider it another data point.

10x the file size going from H.265 to DNxHR makes sense.  H.265 is extremely efficient.   Also, in Shutter Encoder, encoding to DNxHR type HQX produced 10 bit files for me as expected. (Adobe Media Encoder produced similar results, about 10x the original size.)

Re: Does Avid accept H265 yet?

I think you are right my friend.  Long GOP H265 is the best algorithm there is at the moment I think - my AVC intra on my current Sony pro camera is H264, as was my 10 year old Panasonic P2 AVC camera!

Can you tell me why you think the Shutter Encoder DNxHR type HQX is 10 bit - the spec seems to say 12 bit for DNxHR type HQX?

I lavishly praised Avid last week but when the drone manual says FCP and Premiere accept this codec no problem it is a bit dissapointing my 'higher end' editor doesnt.  DJI dont even mention Avid anywhere - its off the radar.  It's a company that sells millions of these devices too...

    Cheers

Pretty sure Resolve 16.2.1 just did some updates that involved improved H265 handling. You can use that to very quickly make any flavour of Avid media you want? Or Prores?

Double checked -- both MediaInfo and Premiere are reporting the files as 10-bit.

Re: Does Avid accept H265 yet?

Thanks for running with me on this guys!

I have checked the Avid DnX format's specified "12bit" for DNxHR HQX and what i get out from Shutter Encoder is 10 bit:

Curiously the end filesize is the same for DNxHR HQX and DNxHR HQ (8 bit).

Have set it to generate an Op Atom mxf - however the output doesnt play nicely in my Avid.  It runs the RAID 450Mbps disk at 10% and the CPU at 49% but drops frames like mad in 'yellow' mode. I didnt think we had yellow mode but it seems to have re-apperaed!

If I do nail a good workflow I'll report back - this one is still not quite there.

    Thanks for the help.

PS - this is a great app - I can even add a LUT to the process so as it comes in with a LUT already on, which will be good for most footage. Definitely making a donation to the developer.  Does anyone know if you can save presets in it - cant seem to find a way.

    DIESELE:

I seem to remember being told this was because the data rate stays the same, only the bit depth changes. So in actuality, the 10 bit variant would actually be an imperceptibly lower data rate than the 8 bit version because the 10 bit version has to fit in some overhead for the extra bit depth? This made more sense to me when the codecs were still named 185 and 185X. If you check them, they both are 185 mbit/sec but one is 10 bit.  That's what I remember anyway. Fuzzy on the details.

Out of curiosity, have you tried using Resolve? I really find that it handles most everything, creates very reliable Avid media and does it *** quick too - quicker than Avid does.

Re: Does Avid accept H265 yet?

Thanks Andi - what you say makes sense having seen some Avid bandwidth spec here: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/White_Paper/DNxHR-Codec-Bandwidth-Specifications

I just tried Resolve (and yes that drag/scroll in the bin thumbnail is a BRILLIANT function Peter).  Sadly it doesnt seem to like my H265 source and states 'media offline'.  I tried an H264 to check, and that goes in fine.

Crazy, may I ask what is the model and make of the drone? Would be interested to know as I often work with drone stuff too...

Its the Mavic 2 Pro. It will do an UHD H264 codec too in 8 bit non log.

    Hmm, I just downloaded some Mavic 2 Pro footage - H265 - DLOG-M 10bit, UHD resolution.

It played fine in my copy of Resolve? I'm running Resolve version 16.2.1017. It's the free version not the Studio version.

Are you on the latest release?

Re: Does Avid accept H265 yet?

    Hi

Yes just downloaded latest free Resolve - never used it before.  I'm just dragging the file into the bin area on left? Are there extra codecs to install as an option?

It plays the DNxHR HQX transcode fine (far far better than juddery frame dropping Avid in fact...).

I cant seem to link it to industry standard Sony FS7 footage even - it always drills down to a file rather than load in the folder.

Maybe this is why I'm sticking to Avid - old dog/new tricks!

Sorry dont want to turn this into a Resolve thread!
