    2020.4 Some feedback

    Hi

The lack of sound issue on importing Canon MTS files has been resolved - based on a quick initial test

    and

Is it advised to remove quicktime from the editing workstation?

    Thanks

I placed my feedback here too. At bin window if I select multiple clips and then press RMB to open context menu - selection changes to one clip where mouse cursor is located over. It happens if cursor is over color or icon column of bin window. Other column is under  - clips selection is ok.

There is an overlap with the new UME linking and QT so both are supported if you have QT installed.

Access to QT (if installed) is planned to be removed in some future release.

SO for now you may get a bit more flexibility leaving QT installed but its wise to work at avoiding it.

    Re: 2020.4 Some feedback

    Hi

    Thanks Pat

How do work to avoid it? Do we know which one takes precedence - QT or UME?

If both are installed does MC use UME first and then if there is no curret UME capabilty does it look for Quicktime libraries or

Does MC use QT as default and if this is not installed it then uses UME

    What's New:
For systems where QuickTime is installed, AMA QuickTime will remain as a linking option, as an autodetect fallback for files that aren’t supported by Avid UME, and for reading files linked via QuickTime in previous versions of Media Composer.

In Media Composer v2020.4, even with QuickTime installed, UME is the autodetect default, with AMA QuickTime being the fallback if the file is not supported by UME. You may manually override UME link to use AMA QuickTime, however.

If you’ve already linked via QuickTime in a previous version, the media will continue to be linked via QuickTime. You will not need to relink your media.

That's just some of the information answering your questions. It can be found starting on page 5 under Important Notes.

    Re: 2020.4 Some feedback

I rushed to install MC 20.4 on a test machine because I badly need to deliver ProRes, and the old Mac I keep around for this porpouse was taking too long for encoding 16 x 25 minutes shows. From the What's new file:

    Not currently supported with UME

    ........

    •QuickTime Ref support

is this both in and out? Too bad!

    •SAS (Same As Source)

    will this come back?

It seems to me that it's not time to uninstall legacy QuickTime yet. Too bad there's no UME h.265 support.

Apple removed QT Reference from Quicktime (AVFoundation). I'm not sure if a third party can deploy on it without Apple's involvement.

I agree that H.265 should be a high priority on the next UME update.
