Is anyone still defragging media drives

I spent the morning cleaning out old media files from my workstation's media drives.   Now I have a lot of space again.   I'm wondering if it's still recommended to de-frag a media drive?

Re: Is anyone still defragging media drives

Avid advised against defragging, even in the old days.

apparently the machine writes media files the same way it wants to read them.

maybe the way audio and video are interleaved in writing to disk, can't recall.

    and never defrag an ssd.

    That's what I remember, too.

I'm referring to 7200rpm mechanical drives.

Its my understanding that Windows auto defrags unless you tell it not to.

SSDs use a system reffered to as Trimm. If you use a defrag on an SSD, the Trimm operation will engage.

Dell Display U2713HM(2560x1440), AMD FX8350 8core, AMD 990FX mobo, 32gig-DDR3-1600, Quadro K620/GTX260/core 216, Audigy2zs, 1TB SSD system drive, 2TB SATA... [view my complete system specs]

Wow.  I've never told it to, not to, or anything...   Makes me wonder what else windows is doing because I never knew to click or not click a setting.

at the same time, you'll have a hard time measuring much negaitive impact from defragging.

    difference seems to be minute.

I'd be very suprised if a lot of us remembered turing it off on every re-install. or ever ;)
