What is the recommended workflow for creating h264 or x264 Blu Ray discs?

    Hi there,

I'm having trouble figuring out the best workflow for producing a h264 or x264 blu ray disc.

The previously advised workflow is QT mov or QT ref from Avid> Sorenson Squeeze to create blu ray files> Avid DVD to author blu ray disc.

However, Avid DVD only supports MPEG-2 encoding for Blu Ray, and I've found the quality is not sufficient for my purposes. It's basically a really lossy crappy encoding that imo doesn't have enough advantage over DVD to be worth bothering with.

Sorenson offers to create x264 or h264 renders for Blu Ray as an alternative to MPEG-2 encoding, but I'm struggling to find a software which can take the resulting .264 video file and .ac3 audio file and actually create a playable blu ray from it. Everything I've tried so far (including Avid DVD) just re-encodes the files into MPEG-2.

What is the advised workflow for this? Ideally I need the ability to add a start menu as well before authoring.

    Hi OWSucks,

Sony Vegas DVD Architect is able to do what you want. You can download a trial version to check it out.

    https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/dvd-architect/

It was also possible with Encore DVD from Adobe. But I don't know if you still can rent Encore DVD at this time.

My best guess would be Adobe Encore.

For encoding, you could check out Pegasys TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works.

This is probably a better answer!

I'd dump Avid DVD. Plenty of low cost option that will do what you want.

But MPEG2 should be fine as long as the datarates high enough. For BluRay I'd be looking at 35mbps or more.

The project is a stage produciton with a heavily spackled floor, and I'm finding on playback with MPEG-2 encoding that the spackling is creating all kinds of playback issues that are not present when using h264 or x264 encoding.

    Hi,

TmpGenc doess not support MXF Op1.

This encoder is OK but it is big drawback.

Try the latest versioin of TMPGenc AUTHORING Works.

It will build your BR complete with customizeable menus and now accepts mxf files.

(If I were starting from scratch and didn't already have Encore sitting around, this is definitely the way I would go.)

    Hello,

I received the following answer from Support of Pegasys (7.05):

At the moment MXF OP1A files with this codec Avid DNxHR and DNxHD
    are not supported.
However, we will send this to the user's wish list.

I would have said your best bet is using Adobe Encore and Media Encoder, but I'm not sure that you can get Encore now?

    1) Export File> Avid Media Processor > DNXHR HQ codec

    2) Import into Adobe Media Encoder > H264 Bluray preset

    4) Import into encore and create your bluray

Encore DVD was immediatly discontinued with the coming of CC in 2012. The latest version out there is CS6.

I use an old copy of Adobe Encore. I still have my cs6 licence.  Adobe does update it from time to time. It will encode and authour both blueray and dvd.  I will take a .mov from a fast export out of avid.

This option depends if you can get an Encore licence though.

It used to be that you could go to "previous versions" for Premiere and download PremiereCS6, which includes Encore.  But it looks like CS doesn't show up anymore under "previous versions"...

Just as additional information: DVD Architect is a superior software for DVD's. However it has some problems with BD's. When I load AVC-media files, it always stops loading, if the size of all loaded media files goes above 9 Gbyte. I do not know, whether this value is a fixed value, but after this amount of loaded media, I cannot load any additional file. DVD Architect stops in the middle of the import process.
