    Up-rez a 1080p full HD project to a 2K version

I am completing a full HD 1080p project that I am thinking of bumping to a 2K version. Can anyone provide any information on the best way to do this? I have a chance to show it in a theater but need at least a 2K master. Thanks!

There are other nle's which are much better at relinking to original media.

My suggestion is (I did this recently)

I would first consolidate your sequence's audio, just in case so you have that seperated.

Move your media that you want to upres to a drive.  Disconnect that drive so everything that you want to upres is offline.

Start AMA linking all your raw footage, and start relinking your master clips.

But its a nightmare!  So good luck.  This is where premiere kind of destroys Media Composer (for now)

Was it shot at 1080p? If so, a simple blow-up should work just fine. Or even more so, if your project's framing aspect ratio is 1920x1080, you would ususally end up doing a 1.85 (Flat) 1998x1080 container (pillarboxed), so there would not even be a blowup.

    Re: Up-rez a 1080p full HD project to a 2K version

I think the first question would be wether source footage was 4k to begin with.

If not, popping whatever you have onto a 2k sequence and resizing is the only option anyway.

and i don't think the relinking has to be that hard.

taking the Avid MediaFiles folder offline by renaming is good enough.

make a new bin, link to all the original footage, sequence should populate. if not, relink sequence to ama clips using  "items in all open bins" method.

Transcode and put the Transcode in the MediaFiles Folder that was previously offline.

Again, I humbly offer: you may not even need to resize, since a DCI 1.85:1 container is just 1080 px high.

If you need it to be 2K wide and its already 1080 tall then I'd pad black on the Left and right to make up the difference.

Otherwise you are stretching the picture wider and knocking the aspect out or cropping top and bottom and losing quality.

To be fair: I only see other NLEs which are much better to loose connection to the existing media...

To be fair dot two: there are other finishing tools which are much better at blowing up stuff.

Are the names of these finishing tools a secret? Thanks.

If you are saying Resolve is better at "blowing an image up", I would suggest you do some reading on the Lift Gamma Gain forum about this.  There has been a lot of discussion as to whether Resolve DOES do a good job of image scaling.  Some say it does not.

I think it is imperative that you test each tool for your self.  What you might think looks good, others may not.

Thank You for Your input Jef, quality loss is much less with Resolve, and You can always compensate for the gamma shift, JMHO though.
